FIXED MEAT PRICES

FARMERS STATE POSITION RECENT INCREASES REVIEWED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Monday There is no definite information concerning the fate of the protest by the master butchers against ollicial instructions that they cannot increase retail prices to cover increased prices ruling for fat stock. The attitude of fanners toward the suggested fixation of prices is summed up in a telegram sent by the president of the Utago Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. It reads: —‘‘(Jtago farmers emphatically protest against the manliest unfairness of price fixation of meal, as war conditions are in no way responsible for recent increases in Tat stock prices. This is solely due to climatic conditions and mainly to the effects of the recent prolonged and severe snowstorms on slock and the fact that they caused very extensive wastage of winter food. .Ys a result farmers now have fewer fat stock to sell and therefore require greatly enhanced prices to compensate them for these heavy storm losses. 1 feel sure the justification for this protest will appeal to you.
