BANDS TO COMPETE

CENTENNIAL FIXTURE KEENNESS APPARENT (Special to Times) • WELLINGTON, Monday The Centennial Brass Bands Contest is to be held in Wellington in February as arranged. This decision was made at a recent meeting, over which Mr Ernest Palliser, president of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association, presided. It was reported that accommodation had been secured for 15 bands, and the list of hotels where bookings had been made was submitted. This list showed, another nine bands, for which, so far, no accommodation had been secured. These have now been informed about accommodation in Wellington, and have been advised to forward their applications to the person in charge of bookings. As entries for the contest do not close till October 25, the chairman said, he thought it was extraordinary to see such keenness on the part of most of the principal bands in New Zealand. The secretary, Mr J. G. Osborne, announced that the Railways Department had promised to carry all bandsmen in uniform, with their wives and families, at excursion rates during the contest period. It was also stated that the contest music had left England and would arrive at Wellington later In the month. The dates of the contest are February 18 to 24, inclusive.
