NEW CHAMPION
WAIKATO BADMINTON R. CANN WINS MEN’S TITLE MISS EDMONDSON HOLDS WOMEN'S By defeating the previous titleholder, H. Fow, in the Anal of the men’s singles, R. Cann, of Hamilton, became the new Waikato badminton champion when the concluding matches of the Waikato Association’s annual tournament were played in the Bledisloe Hall on Saturday night. Cann has shown remarkable improvement since last season and his win over one of the Dominion’s most experienced players was well-deserved. Miss M. Edmondson retained the women's title by defeating Mrs A. J. Y'endell very easily in the final. After winning a long first game in his match with Fow, Cann dropped the second, 15 —0, but recovered splendidly to take the deciding game, 15—11. He played a very steady all-round game and on the night lie was Pow's superior. Always a difficult. man to heat. Fow stuck tenaciously to his task but could not hold his younger opponent. There was little of interest in the women's final in which Miss Edmondson was clearly 100 good for Mrs Yendell and the match ended quickly with the winner losing only five points. Miss Edmondson was very strong overhead and varied her game well to keep her opponent constantly on the move.
The Te Aroha pair, L. Johnston and W, Crawford, did exceptionally well to dispose of Fow and Fear "in the final of the men’s doubles after being down early. Both pairs showed good understanding but the losers were inclined to be erratic in their smashing. In a good match Miss Edmondson and Miss Wade (Auckland) proved too strong for Mesdames Fow and Yendell in the women's doubles final, and in a marathon contest Fow and Mrs Fow carried off the combined doubles title. At the conclusion of play the trophies were presented by the patron of the association. Mr F. W. Platts Miss Edmondson was awarded the Devclin Trophy for the most points in the A section, an honour which she achieved last season. Concluding results were:— A Grade Men’s Singles.—Semi-final: R.
