ELIERSLIE RACES
SECOND DAY RESULTS EKA PAI’S SURPRISE WIN DIVIDEND OF OVER CENTURY (Special from “Martian”) AUCKLAND, Monday The Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern meeting was concluded today in fine weather before another very large attendance. The track was again hard and fast and spectacular racing was witnessed. For the first time for many years a horse paid over a century on the win machine at Ellerslie to-day when Eka Pai, the winner of the second race, won in solid fashion with only £36 on his prospects. He paid over a score for a place, having £9l invested on him while the third horse Vaalsstar paid a similar amount. Following were the results: — HUNT CLUB CUP or £350; about 2$ miles 1 I —BRIDEGROOM, Mr K. McK. Duncan's blk g, by Mimetic—Bridal Veil, aged, 10. u (A. Jenkins) .... 1 2 2—BRITLSiI SOVEREIGN, Mr W. Morns, Cambridge) Reminiscent of the second day at To Rapa recently when sensational dividends were more the order of the day than not was the second race when, as far as the totalisator was concerned, there was probably a unique occurrence, the winner paying over a century straight out and over a score for a place, while the third horse paid tlie same for a place as lhe winner. Eka Pai had shown brilliance at Te Rapa recently and In view of liis good showing on Saturday his price was, definitely, a raise one. " Alter being handily placed in the big field he came away In resolute style in the straight to win very solidly, from bronze Motli. Vaalsstar finished solidly for third. „ Trevace began best and led over the first rurlong rrom Marheke, Noisy Night. Pasture and Tahiti. Crossing the top Trevace was still In lhe lead and was followed toy Noisy Night, Tahiti, Bronze Moth, Nordic song, Eka Pai. and spearl'ord. There was not change in the order at the hall-mile and Trevace led into the straight from Noisy Night, Tahiti, Bronze Moth and Eka pai, with Vaalsstar and Nordic Song next Eka Pai finished very well to win by three parts or a length from Bronze Moth, with Vaalsstar hall-a-length away third. Then came spearlord, Prival, Pasture, Erlick and Fleetw ind. Time, 1.27 3-5. REMUERA HURDLES or £500; 2 miles 1 l—-CHARADE, Mr A. W. Meikle’s ch in, by Lord Quex —Charlady, 6 yrs, 11.10 (A. Thompson) (Winner trained by H. S. Greene, Greenmeadows) Charade, the Great Northern Hurdles winner of opening day, was back down tu a short price, and, after hitting the front passing the stands, she carried on to lead the field a merry dance and won very attractively. bil'orm, whose recent consistent rorm. had drawn attention to his credentials, finished on in determined style, while Erination’s performance under 11.13 was altogether an Impressive one. Esteem was slow to move and Erinatlon led over the first furlong rrom Pyrenees, Agog and All Irish. Charade was moving up gradually, and although she hit the fence leading into the straight hard, he she was in charge passing the stands from All Irish, Ermation and Bil'orm, with a gap of two lengths to limes© Lad and Agog with Pyrenees and Esteem some lengths away. Charade and All Irish were in charge along the back two lengths out from Inness Lad and Erinatlon with Bil'orm and Agog handily placed and a gap to Esteem and Pyrenees. Charade, who was moving well within him self at this stage, was six lengths clear at the half-mile and as they stxaightened up for home still held a commanding lead over Erinatlon, Biform, Inness Lad and All Irish with Pyrenees handily placed and Agog and Lsteem bringing up the rear. In the straight, Charade won nicely by a length from biform, who finished strongly to beat Erinatlon by two lengths. Pyrenees was fourth, and then lullowed All Irish, Agog, Esteem. Time, 3.42 3-5. Survoy, the early leading favourite for the big cross-country Ellerslie classic, realised expectations when, alter a polished exhibition of jumping, in* followed the pace-makers, John Charles and Power Chief to the half-mile and alter joining the issue with Power Chief at the la.-t fenee, fought out a torrid finish tu beat him by the narrowest of margins. in* was ridden a patient and well-judged race toy the southern horseman. A. E. Ellis, and once over tbe last fence, tbe lw"« ** ••
In doubt. Power Chief made a bold bit to carry off tbe Jumping honours of th< meeting, but the torrid pace toe toad set in front with John Ctoarles found toim wanting In the keen set-to toe toad wiUi survoy over tbe last luu yards or so. Bryce street was tailed off early and was never dangerous.
Gascyne led early and up the hill the first time was showing out from Roxy, Kinkle, John Charles, Survoy and En Tour, over the water jump the first time kinkle was Just in front of John Charles, with Power Chief close up, witn a gap to Roxy, survoy and Gascyne and another gap to En Tour, smiling Thru’ and Bryce street, who was tailing the field at this stage, made a faulty jump and up the hill the second time Power Chief, who had gone to the front, was closely followed by John Charles, with several lengths lo Roxy, survoy, Kinkle and En Tour, with Gascyne and smiling Thru’ following with a gap oi 20 lengths to Bryce street and irisu Comet. Roxy fell at the sod wall entering the final round and over the double power Chief was shading John Ctoarles, with survoy some lu lengths away in front of En Tour, Kinkle, smiling lhru' and Gascyne, with a gap to Bryce street. Along the back Power Chief and John Charles were practically on terms and they led up the hill the last time clear of Survoy, En Tour and smiling Thru'. They continued down the hill on terms with survoy making up ground fast and entering the straight he had reached Power Chief with John Charles right behind. At the last rence survoy was in front and although Power Chief "bored out on him In the straight, he got the verdict by a nose from Power Chler, with smfllnv Thru’ several lengths away En Tour was fourth and then came John" Charles, with a gap to Kinkle. Bryce street and Irish Comet were both pulled up. Time, 7.55 3-5.
