June 4 The Australian Bob Skene, making his debut in international polo, scored two goals, but the Americans, paced by Tommy Hitchcock, defeated the British by 11 to 7, in opening: the international scries at the Meadow Brook Club. The Americans scored twice in the first two minutes, and never lost the lead. The British, replying to Skene’s front riding and Tyrrell Martin’s defence, rallied sharply in the final period, but it was ton late. Ironically it was an American newcomer, Stewart Iglehart, who had been inserted in Ihe line-up at the 1 Ith hour owing to Cecil Smith’s injuries, who was chiefly responsible for the British defeat. Iglehart’s defence was inspired, consistently turning the play with seemingly impossible shots as the British threatened.
