ELLERSLIE CARNIVAL OPENS ROYAL APPELLANT SURPRISES GAY SETON AT LONG ODDS The impressive success of Charade in the Great Northern Hurdles and the surprise wins of Royal Appellant in the Cornwall Handicap and Gay Seton in the sprint were features of the opening day, Saturday, of the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie. Ideal weather conditions obtained and the racing surface was in splendid winter order for this time of the year. Three favourites won outright but generally it was not a fortunate day for the investing public Royal Appellant's return being over a quarter of a century straight-out and that of Gay Seton in the last over a third of a century. Black Musk, Jack Tar and Philcourt, Gold Vaals all but railing as the field went out or the straight. Entering the back stretch. King Rey went to the the Tront and was followed by Royal Appellant, Gay Rose, Jack Tar, Philcourt. High Tea. Royevrus. and Gay Rebel. Royal Appellant was stifl racing behind King Rey hair a mile Trom home and the pair at this stage was setting a torrid pace Tor Tooley .•street. High Sea. Philcourt. Royevrus and Valmint. Tooley Street. King Rey and Royal Appellant were practically in line as they went to the home straight, with Philcourt and Royevrus handy behind and Valmint heading the others, in a good finish, in which oniy the judge was in a position to declare the verdict. British Sovereign, who who had also been working impressively berore the meeting, gave a solid display and may do better as the meeting progresses. Green Label, displaying early brilliance, hit the front at the outset and was followed past the stands by Tupeotu. Bridegroom, British Sovereign and Windsor Lass. Racing along the back Bridegroom had run up behind Green Label and the pair was followed at this stage by British Sovereign, Tupeoto and Windsor Lass, who were at the end or a gap or Tour lengths. Rridegrooin hit the front at the hair-mile and led into the straight clear of British Sovereign and Green Label. Over the deciding stages, the leader held on to win convincingly by five lengths from Rritish Sovereign, with eight lengths to Green Label. Tupeoto was Fourth, with Windsor Lass next. Time. 3.47. Orwere attempted to win rrom end' to end but could not go on with it In the straight. Whirling was first to show out but when the field settled down Orwere had charge from Gay Seton, Tepotu and Marie’s Acre. Across the top Orwere had opened up a gap or three lengths and led into the straight from Gay Seton, wliu was moving rapidly.
