IMPORTS FROM FRANCE
EFFECT OF RESTRICTIONS BLOW TO SHEEP INDUSTRY The fact that the Government import restrictions might have serious repercussions on the sheep industry was mentioned at the annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation in Hamilton yesterday when Mr G. A. Walsh (Cambridge) brought forward a remit to be sent to the Dominion conference in Wellington in July. The meeting was presided over by Mr N. P. Adams (Clevedon). The remit was as follows: "That the Minister of Marketing be approached with regard to his intention in respect to imports from France to New Zealand.”
“The balance of trade between the two countries is about 90 per cent in favour of New Zealand,” said Mr Walsh. “Wool, hides and tallow have found an outlet in France, and in a peak year mean as much as £3,000,000 to the Dominion. From France we take only about £300,000 worth of goods a year, and we should endeavour to find out of, in the event of our French market being affected, we will be able to secure another market without a serious effect in the prices. These restrictions might be a serious blow to the industry.”
