WAIKATO AIRPORT

COST TO LOCAL BODIES OPINION OF FARMERS’ UNION ■Opposition to the responsibility for the purchase of the Waikato Airport at Rukuhia being placed on local bodies was voiced at a meeting yesterday of the Waikato sub-provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The matter was brought ud for discussion by Mr R. G. Young, who stated that the cost would have to be met by the ratepayers and in view of similar schemes having 1 proved * liabiltiy in that respect, he was opposed to the cost of the airport becoming a local body undertaking. A motion was carried stating that while the executive approved of local body control being exercised in respect to the airport, it considered that any capital used in the project should be borne by the airport and the cost not loaded on to the land.
