SPECTACULAR RUGBY AGAIN
STAG TROPHY SERIES CONTINI/ED OLD RIVALS MEET IN HAMILTON LAST GAMES BEFORE WAIKATO FIXTURE Technical Old Boys 17. Taupiri 6 City 12. Rovers 5 Old Boys 14, Frankton 5 Te Awamutu 8, Hautapu 3 Raglan 16, United 8 Putaruru a bye With weather and ground conditions again in first class order for Rugby many spectacular games were again played in the Waikato territory to-day. The form of the players selected to play for Waikato against Auckland, in the first representative match of the season in Hamilton on Monday, was watched with great interest and there seems no doubt that for the first time on a dry ground Waikato will have definite prospects. For the second time this season the leading team, Old Boys, played in Hamilton and enthusiasts were again given the opportunity of seeing Waikato’s inside backs in operation. There is no doubt that they possess the combination needed and provided they pass the ball along smartly to the line threequarters there should be some grand play on Monday. In the main match at Hamilton two old rivals, in Old Boys and Frankton met, while Taupiri, another leading team, encountered their sternest opposition so far when playing Technical Old Boys. City, who won their first two games, played Rovers at Te Awamutu. Raglan played United at Raglan and Hautapu and Te Awamutu staged the chief attraction at Cambridge, Putaruru drawing the bye.
FOURTH VICTORY
OLD BOYS AGAIN FRANKTON NARROWLY BEATEN Old Boys, the leaders in the Stag Trophy competition gained their fourth consecutive victory to-day when they defeated Frankton, their old rivals by 14 points to 6 at Rugby Park Hamilton. The game was very evenly contested but over-eagerness spoilt most movements and Ihe display was not as bright as was anticipated. Frankton played bustling football all through Lbe first half and led at half time by 5 points to nil. In the second half Old Boys showed to better advantage but it was apparent that the inside backs were not keen on being injured in view of Monday’s big fixture. The outstanding player on the field was Finlay, Old Boys’ centre, who played a very line game both on attack and defence. Ward, Frankton’s fullback, handled well and kicked very powerfully hut lje was not always sound facing forward rushes nor in tackling. He will have to improve for Monday. The Frankton forwards again played very line Rugby and the way they Dot tied up Old Boys' scoring machine was an education. Everest, Davies, Bowler, Elliott and Phillips were the pick of Ihe team. Slow for Old Boys was just as good as Ward. Neither Broad nor Wilkins reproduced their best form. FIRST DEFEAT TAUPIRI GO DOWN TECHNICAL’S IMPRESSIVE WIN Taupiri suffered their first defeat of the season at Taupiri today when they were beaten by Technical Old Boys by 17 points to 6. Though giving away a fair amount in weight the Technical pack turned on a magnificent exhibition while their backs handled and defended well. In the light set scrums the Taupiri forwards had the better of things, but in the loose play the fitness of the visitors was a telling factor. In a fine pack Stanich was outstanding for Technical, while Jordan, Smith and Anderson were also prominent. The Taupiri forwards did not go as well as previous games though Galley and Taylor made strenuous endeavours to stay the tide. Both played well, Catlev being the better. Goosman, who scored two tries for Technical ran very determinedly and was most impressive on attack. Behind the scrum P. Tetzlaff was very sound on defence and sent away good passes.
