(Winner trained by M. S. Green, Green meadows) John Charle.- drew attention to his Great Northern Steeplechase prospects by the quality of his smooth display. Always one or the leaders over the tlrst round, he drew out with London on entering the final circuit and outstayed the former to win convincingly. The showing or London was meritorious, but he railed after having every chance. At the Ilrst rence London was just in front, of Right Royal and Tea Chat with John Charles, Mahala, Bells of Bow, Hanover and Wasp all in a bunch and King Stroud and Car Leaf (who had not jumped too well)trailing the field. As they raced up the hill Tea Chat was Just in rront or London and Right Royal. At the first fence on the hill, Car Leaf baulked and, although he eventually cleared the obstacle, he refused the next and was not persevered with. Racing over the double in front ot the stands, there was little be- % tween London, Right Royal, Mahala. and John Charles, Bells or Bow, railing at the second fence or ihe double. Along the back, John Charles moved up behind London and the pair was two lengths clear of Right Royal, and at this stage there was a gap of si\ lengths to Mahala, Hanover, and AVasp. i p the hill John Charles and J.ondon were racing on terms and aftpr going down to the fiat together, they breasted the final obstacle with nothing between them. Ln the straight John Charles had the bptter or the race home and went on to win by four lengths from London, with Hanover two lengths away third. Right Royal was fourth and then at later intervals came Wasp and Mahala. with a big gap to Tea Chat, who had never jumped confidently. Time, 5.5. The Great Northern Hurdles of 1939 lacked Tew or the thrills attached to the big Kllerslie jumping event, with the favourite Charade, and the improving Te Rapatrained Innes Lad lighting out a thrilling finish, the well supported Agog Tailing at the first fence and Gascyne emulating his example at the next. Royal Dance, who at the time was leading the field, also came to gricr when entering the straight later at the completion or a round. Adsum survived the journey till the last rence. Charade, who won at the Manawatu meeting recently and who was confidently supported by his connections, gave an impressive display, while the showing of Innes Lad, who was improved by his racing at Te Rapa, was by far his best to date and a tribute to the patient policy of the young Te Rapa trainer, R. Cotter. Mio Lume was never dangerous. Adsum was ilrst to show out and passing the stands was in front of Agog, Erlnation. Celtic Lad. Charade. Royal Dance, Chikara, Mio Lume, and Esteem, with Irlsn Comet, Ladv England. Count Roussilon, Ell Tour and Inness Lad. As they passed the stands again .Charade, who had moved into a handy position along the back, and who was in front as they came to the stialght, was in charge from Royal Dance. Five furlongs rrom home, Charade was clear of Royal Dance, with Inness Lad moving up and Erination, Chikara, Lady England, Celtic Lad, Ell Tour and Mio Luine. However, a furlong further on, Inness Lad and moved up smartly ami had joined the issfie with Charade three rurlongs rrom home, where the pair were fully 12 lengths out •from Erination. who was heading the remainder of the field. Charade and Inness l ad were raring on terms as they levelled up for home but after being still together at the last fence, Charade outstayed Inness Lad to beat him bv one and a-hair lengths. * Erination was ‘third and then radio En Tour fourth, followed by Pyrennees. Royal Dance, Chikara, Mio Lume, Irish Comet and Lady England. Time, 4.43 3-5.

Royal Appellant paid over a quarter of
a century on the win machine. While, during the present term, he has shown encouraging form on several occasions, today’s effort was his best performance to date, and it was due to the vigorous riding of the Te Awamutu horseman, R. E. Horne, that he scored narrowly in a spectacular finish, with the consistent but unlucky Cornwall runner, Valmint. To-day was the third occasion on which Valmint has been deprived of the major prize. Jack Tar made a particularly meritorious showing. while Inver endorsed the good Impression that has been created in recent track work. King Rey, after hitting the front in the first Turlong and making play hair-wa.v down the running, indicated an early return to former brilliance over the middle distances.
Royal Appellant and Gay Rose began the smartest of the field and they were followed past the stands by Royevrus, Rlaek Musk. Jack Tar and Philcourt, Gold Vaals all but Tailing as the field went out or the straight. Entering the back stretch. King Rey went to the the Trent and was followed by Royal Appellant, Gay Rose, Jaek Tar. Philcourt. High Tea, Royevrus. and Gav Rebel. Royal Appellant was still racing behind King. Rey hair a mile from home and the pair at this stage was setting a torrid pace Tor Tooley Street. High sea. Philrourt. Royevrus and Valmint. Tooley Street. King Rey and Royal Appellant were praetieally in line as they went to the home straight, with Philcourt and Royevrus handy behind and A'almint heading the others. In a good finish, in which only the Ridge was in a position to declare the verdict. Royal Appellant won by a short neck rrom Valmint, with Jack Tar three-parts or a length away third. Inver was Tourth. and then came Valmint. Black Musk, Gay Rose and Philcourt. Time, 2.8. HUNT CLUB HURDLES Of £350; 2 miles 1— I—BRIDEGROOAf. Air K. McK.
