HAMILTON GROUP : j WAIKATO FEDERATION A large crowd attended the May group meeting of the Waikato Federation of Women's Institutes held in Te Pahu on May 24. Mrs W. Bollard presided, and thanked all present for their attendance. Before the meeting opened Mrs D. Cate, group convener, was presented with a beautiful posy from members of the Te Pahu Women's Institute. * The group business was dealt with, and it was finally decided that the Whitiora Women's Institute would be hostesses at the October meeting and the group competition would be “A Christmas Carol” by a choir of not more than 10 voices. _ A delightful programme was contributed by the following:—Mesdames Dawson and Cole Baker, vocal solos; Miss Joan Fowle, toe and tap dancing; Mrs J. Renaiff, monologue. The winners of the competitions were as fol-jows:—-Te Pahu Women’s Institute competition, Mrs Sanders; Ohaupo Women’s Institute competition, Mes- ■ dames Harris and Taylor; Whitiora Women’s Institute competition, Mes- ; dames Roth well and Levany; Nawton- ■ Itotokauri Women’s Institute competition, Mrs Lloyd; Te Kowhai competition, Mrs Harris. The group competition “A tableau or character sketch” was delightfully J staged by five Institutes, Te Pahu Women’s Institute with "Build a Nation” and Hillcrest Women's Institute • yvith ‘‘The Virtue of the Women’s Ini stitute” being the winners. Te Kowhai presented "In Your Gown of Blue Brocade,” minuet, Whatawhata Women’s Institute, three brides showing period frocking, Fairfield Women’s Institute, a character sketch. Afternoon tea was served and confided a delightful afternoon.
AT WAITERIMU
BIRTHDAY PARTY The Waiterimu-Matahura Hall was gaily decorated with green and gold streamers and large coloured butterflies on the occasion of the sth birthday ball of the local Women's Institute. There was a large attendance. Guests of the Institute were: Mrs McGaughran, president of the Northern Waikato Federation; Mrs Chapman, president of the Waikato federation, Mrs R. Grundy, former president of the Institute; Mrs Hawkin, former secretary; Mrs lies, first producer for the drama circle and Mrs Irving, former treasurer of the Institute. Mrs C. Storey welcomed the visitors, and short addresses were given by Mrs McGaughran and Mrs Chapcnan. Prizes for novelty dances were won l»y Mr and Mrs J. Smith, Mr Carley and Miss P. Taylor. A feature of the supper was the large birthday rake which had been made by Mrs C. Storey. TAUHEI BRANCH A pleasant afternoon was spent recently in the hall when the first meeting of the year of the Tauhei branch of the Womens Division was held. Mrs Crow, president, occupied the chajr and there was a good if.tendance. one new member being welcomed. The roH call “A kindness l wil
iiiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii always remember” was responded to by all present. Mrs F. Jack was voted the winner of the competition for a knitted infant’s singlet and bootees. All articles exhibited were presented to the branch to be forwarded to the Sunshine League. During the afternoon the opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mrs L. Howie who is leaving the district, in a few wellchosen words Mrs Crow voiced the regret of members at Mrs Howie's departure and mentioned that as a foundation member she had done much to help the branch. As a small teken of esteem she was presented with a pair of Winton china jugs. Mrs Case also presented her with a beautiful bouquet of chrysanthemums. Mrs Howie suitably replied. Mrs Hutchings forwarded a large bundle of plants and cuttings to I>f distributed amongst members, which were much appreciated. Hostesses for the afternoon were McscUmcs Frcecard and Howie.
