HON. P. FRASER’S VISIT LOCAL BODY DEPUTATIONS (Special to Timer!, TE AWAMUTU, Friday During the visit of the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Eraser, to Te Awamutu this week a deputation from I the Waipa County Council drew' ati tention to the fact that the school buses had to travel round some difficult corners which created a danger to the passengers. The Minister stated that if the roads were dangerous the buses would be taken off the road at once. The care of the roads was in the hands of the local authority. The Te Awamutu Borough Council asked for a grant towards the cost of sealing and concreting the footpath along the nexv school frontage. The minister declined to ask for a grant as the department had provided a fine school and it was for the eoaineil to provide access. The chairman of the school committee. Mr G. B. Melrose, asked the minister whether it would be possible to establish the free milk service at Te Awamutu, and Mr Fraser replied that he was surprised to learn that the service was not in operation. He would support the representation to have It established as early as possible. CHAIRMAN REBIGNB PRIMARY SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE ON NEW BODY It may be safely said that no one has shown greater Interest In the establishment of the new school at Te Awaimitu than Mr G. B. Melrose, whn j for twelve years has been chairman of I the Te Awamutu Sohool Committee. As Jthe result of the establishment of the j school, Mr Melrose found that it was 1 necessary that he should resign from the committee so as to take his place las Te Awamutu representative on the ; committee which is to control the new schooL His resignation was placed before the committee at its meeting last evening and in doing so Mr Melrose expressed his appreciation of the harmonious relations which had existed between committee members at all times. Supporting a resolution that Mr Melrose’s services be marked by suitable recordings in the records of the committee,' Messrs Adams and Armstrong expressed their regret at the resignation, and Mr Woods said that he felt that the primary schools were losing their best friend. Mr Savin urged that the resignation be held over till such time as the new constitution was effected for he felt that the interests of education would best served if there were one committee to control both schools, and he Would like to see Mr Melrose rhairman. Continuance in office by Mr Melrose would help to bring nearer the I sole-committee idea. I Mr Adams withdrew h!s resolution, as the unanimous feeling was that there should be one committee, and Mr Melrose was asked to defer resigning, j In reply. Mr Melrose stated that he I appreciated the sentiments of the meeting, but until the authorities j agreed with his opinion that there should be a sole committee and put it into effect, he would have to relinquish his connection with the committee. At Ihe same time, he would not give up j interest but would guard the interests J of the primary school as much as he [was able.
