MINE FATALITY
YOUNG MAN KILLED WOODEN BEAM FALLS ANOTHER WORKER INJURED A young man, Jack Cooper, aged about 21, son of Mrs E. Cooper, Glen Massey Road, Ngaruawahla, was killed and another worker, W. Colye, aged about 22 years, received bruises and abrasions, when a support in the Wilton Coal Mine, Glen Massey, collapsed this morning. The heavy wooden beam caught Cooper on the back of the neck, killing him instantly. There was a full shift at work this morning and the accident occurred without warning after the men had been engaged for more than three hours. The beam, which was the only one that was dislodged, was directly above where Cooper was working, and he had no chance of escaping.
No fall of earth or coal followed the collapse of the beam, and the other miners, further in the shaft, had no difficulty in getting out. The accident occurred about half-way along the shaft, which is bored into the side of a hill.
