TE AROHA BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL The Mayor, Mr R. Coulter, presided at the May meeting of the Te Aroha Borough Council. There were present: Messrs G. Hedge, V. G. Hamilton, W. C. Kennedy, W. A. Clark, F. T. Halligan, W. T. Dale, the town clerk, Mr F. W. Wild, and the electrical engineer, Mr C. Dalton. The manager of the abattoir, Mr A. J. Hill, reported that in April 83 large cattle, 258 sheep and 16 pigs had been slaughtered, the fees totalling £94 15s 6dThe Department of Health notified that the suggested tank scheme for the Te Aroha town area would he acceptable.—The matter was referred to the works committee for the submission of estimates. The Mayor of Auckland wrote asking the council for £27, the Te Aroha contribution to the cancer research fund. The New Zealand Red Cross Society thanked the council for arranging i public meeting to form a local branch. Reading Room Closed The Tourist and Publicity Department wrote in regard to the closing of the Domain reading room, that a portion of the building was required for leasing as there had for years been losses in connection with the Tourist Domain. It. was the intention to provide a rest room in the Domain The Te Aroha Rugby Union was granted the use of Herries Park on June 5, with permission to charge for admission. The Auckland committee of the Centennial Exhibition wrote that the proposals for space exhibits could be carried out, and forwarded suggestions relative to photographs. The Hon. W. E. Parry intimated that the request from the Power Boards relative to restrictions being removed from the importation of electrical appliances would be brought before the Government. Street Works The report on the street inspection was approved. Total expenditure on street work, maintenance and improvements was estimated at £4856, including water account requirements £I3OO. quarry £950, bitumenising Poole’s Road £143, erection of new gates at Herries Park entrance, and planting trees on the hillside. It was decided to convene a public meeting to decide upon a Centennial memorial for Te Aroha. The treasurer reported the bank overdraft at £2183 17s Bd, and accounts totalling £1635 Os 8d were passed for payment. Leave of absence was granted to Mr A. Spence, of the borough staff, on account of ill-health.
