People read by these bacteria lamps—invented by Hiroshi Nakamura, of the Tokio Imperial University. Light for these lamps comes from bacteria in cuttle fish, which have properties similar to that of the glow-worm. Carefully cultivated colonies, living in “bulbs” will shine for three years. Five “lamps” were used to photograph the book above.
