SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS DEPUTATION TO MINISTER A deputation representing the Otorohanga School Committee waited upon the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, at. the opening of the Te Awamutu Intermediate School. The deputation consisted of Mr XV. I. Bowyer, chairman of the school committee and a member of the Auckland Education Board, Mr T. Staitc, Mr W. XVilliamson and Mrs 11. M. Quin. After the deputation had been introduced by Mr XX'. J. Broadfoot,. M.P. for XVaitomo, the urgent need for additional school grounds, new infant school rooms, swimming baths and general improvements was put forward. The Minister gave careful attention to the various requests, and stated that he would put them through the proper channels for consideration. after which the committee would he advised of the result.
VALEDICTORY MR H. INGRAM HONOURED Mr H. Ingram, formerly postmaster of Otorohanga, was honoured by a largely-attended “ smoko,” in the Legion of Frontiersmen’s Club .when all the local social and sports bodies were represented. Mr C. Jackson presided and gave the toast of the evenMr Ingram was associated with almost all the social and sporting activities of the town and district during his long residence in Otorohanga. Several speakers eulogised his sterling qualities, and he was presented with a valuable fountain pen as an appreciation of the good work he had done. In reply, Mr Ingram referred to the cordial relations enjoyed with all members of the community during his period of office. Musical items and monologue entertainment was provided by Messrs H. Shove. G. H. Phillips, T. Campstone, T. Mc'Cready, Sid Johnston, Ben Carr, H. Millec, and O. Olden. REQUIEM MASS A Requiem Mass for the late Rev. George Palmer was said in the Anglican Church of St. Bride’s Otorohanga, by the Bishop of Waikato, the Right Rev. C. A. Cherrington, assisted by the Rev. E. A. Addis, vicar of Otorohanga. Deceased’s five sons and his son-in-law acted as bearers. The Ven. Archdeacon Hori Rati, Rev. W. Skey, Mrs Brigham and Miss Webster represented the Maori Mission. Many clergymen from King Country parishes were also present. The Masonic service was read by the W.M., W. J. C. Patterson, and many members of the Otorohanga lodge paid their tribute at the graveside. The late Mr Palmer was born at Norfolk Island 63 years ago, and was a son of the late Archdeacon of Melanesia. He was educated at Sydney and XX'anganui Collegiate School, afterwards studying at St. John’s College. Some time later his health broke down and he was ordered to take up a rural occupation. He was ordained deacon in 1924 and priest in 1927, serving for some years at Piopio and Te Kuiti. In 1927 he was vicar of St. Peter’s, Katikati. Bay of Plenty, and in 1934 he joined the Maori Mission at Taumarunui. A short time ago he was transferred to Waitara. He is survived by his xvidow, Nurse Palmer (Otorohanga), whom he married in 1931, and five sons and two daughters by a former marriage. TABLE TENNIS A table tennis club has been formed at Otorohanga, with the following officers: president, Mr F. Bulford; vice-president, Mr A. Wilshier; executive, Messrs J. Gould, L. Stamp, E. Taylor and X\\ Kehely. Three tables will be provided, and the new club will meet each Monday and Wednesday evenings in the Legion of Frontiersmen's club, opening on June 7.
