WEATHER DURING MAY ONE OF DRIEST ON RECORD FIVE FROSTS EXPERIENCED With only 1.30in. of rain experienced for the 31 days, last month was one of the driest Mays on record in Hami’ton. the only comparable figure in recent years being that of May, 1936. when 1.7 tin. were recorded. The average for the month is 4.63in. .’n other years absence of rain in May lias usually meant a succession of frosts, but such has not been the case this year. In Hamilton there were oniy five frosts during the month. The heavies frost in Hamilton last month was one of four degrees on May 28, showing that conditions were far less severe than in other years, when frosts above 10 degrees have not been uncommon. The total number of frosts in May. five, was the same as last year, but did not approach the total in some previous years, notably 1936, when 10 frosts occurred. With 14 frosts, the heaviest of 10 degrees on May 18, conditions at Ruakura provided a contrast to those experienced in the Hamilton Borough during May. On the other hand the rainfall recorded at Ruakura for the month was even more meagre than tLat registered in Hamilton, the total fall being only ,90iu. This Morning’s Frost This morning a frost of ldeg. was recorded in Hamilton, and one of 4.2 deg. at Ruakura. Frosty conditions in Hamilton were accentuated by a heavy, damp log which hung o\er the town until alter 9 a.m.
