THE WESTFIELD MARKETS GOOD DEMAND FOR VEAL (By Telegrapn.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Thursday The veal section at the Westfield fat stock market yesterday was the only one to make any marked improvement. compared with last week. Cow and heifer beef showed improvement. steers sold to £l4. the same price as was reached last week, and cows and heifers made a slight Fain with bids rising to £9 2s 6d. Keen competition was a factor making for a steady mutton market. Wethers §sold to 26s 6d. a drop of 6d, and ewes sold to 20s. a decline of is. Lambs made firm late rates. Prime lambs were traded to 25s fid, a slight drop on the previous best. For the first time in many weeks calf prices showed an inclination to improve. Runners reached a top price of £fi 10s. compared with £7 2s fid last Wednesday, and vealers made to £i 15s, against £i 12s. Bacon and pork showed an easing in price. Baconers made to £4 Cs, which was 3s Jess than at the last sale, although two prime sorts mad** £4 lfis. The best price for porkers was £2 16s, a drop of 2s on the former best ofTer, and they averaged 5Ad to fid per lb. The baconer average was fid to fi 1 d per ib. The market for store pigs improved.. Individual Consignments Top price for steers was £l4, made by lines from Mr I. Larner, Morrinsville, and Thompson and Earnest, Whakatane. A consignment from Mr A. Main. Hautapu, to £il. Buyers went to £7O 12s 6d for a line from Mr F. M. Dodds, Putaruru. Cows and heifers traded on behalf Mr .1. Johnstone, Manurcwa, and Mr J. Pohlen, Matarnata, sold to £1) 2s 6d, and a line from the estate of J. Biddles, Pukehuia, realised to £8 17s Gd. A lot from Mr H. Windsor, Matangi, sold to £8 15s. Lines from Mr G. J. Walker, Te Awamutu, sold to £8 ss. Other quotable lines were sold on account of Mr R. F. Hall, Walton, to £7 2* Gd. Dalgety and Company Sheep.—We again had a big yarding of sheep. Competition was good and values ruled very firm to better than last week. Extra heavy prime wethers realised 26s 3d to 275; heavy, 25s to 265; medium, 22s 6d to 24s fid; light, 21s to 225; light and unfinished, 15s to 17s 6d; heavy prime ewes, 17s to 18s; lighter, 14s to lGs 6d: other ewes, 8s to 12s Gd; maiden ewes, 19s to 21s Gd. Lambs.—An average entry of lambs sold freely at full late rates. Heavy prime lambs brought 20s to 21s 6d; medium, 18s to 19s 6d; lighter, 16s to 17s 6d; small and plain, 8s to 12s 6d. - Calves.—We again yarded calves in large numbers. Prime quality calves were not in heavy supply and values for these showed a slight improvement on last week's quotations. Plain sorts are still unwanted and values showed no improvement on late rates. Runners sold at £3 to £5; heavy vealers, £3 15s to £4 14s; medium, £2 15s to £3 12s; light, £2 is to £2 12s; small, £l 16s to £2; smaller, £1 6s to £1 13s; unfinished and bucket-fed, 12s to 18s; bobby calves, 6s to 13s. Pigs.—Pigs came forward in average numbers. A steady sale resulted, with values for both bacon and pork easing slightly on last week’s quotations. Choppers made up to £2 16s; heavy baconers, £3 16s to £4 2s; medium, £3 9s to £3 14s; light, £3 Is to £3 6s; heavy porkers, £2 10s to £2 16s; medium. £2 2s to £2 8s; light, £1 14s to £1 19s. Store pigs were in small -numbers and values im r proved considerably. Good quality prime vealers w r ere in shorter supply and the demand for this class showed a slight improvement, while plain and unfinished calves were firm at late quotations. Heavy prime runners brought £5 to £6 10s; light and unfinished, £3 to £4 ss; heavy prime vealers, £3 15s to £4 14s; medium. £2 16s to £3 10s; light. £2 2s to £2 14s: smaller, £1 7s to £1 18s: small, 16s to £1 ss: bobby calves, 2s to 14s; unfinished and bucket-fed calves, Ids to 16s. A total of 152 calves was sold.
