FAT STOCK SALES VALUES FOR BEEF FIRMER WORKER PRICES WEAKER AUCKLAND, Thursday Beef values showed a firming tendency at the Westfield fat stock sale yesterday. In a smaller yarding of ox beef competition was steady and average quotations were unchanged. The best price for steers was made by a show bullock, which reached £l6 10s, compared with £l4 last week. Cows and heifers sold to £lO 15s, against £lO 2s 6d at the last sale. Values for a full average entry of sheep were Arm on the whole. The top price Tor ewes was 23s fid, against 24s previously, and ewes sold to 19s, this price being for prime maiden ewes. The best ewe last week made 1 is 9d. Prime lambs made to 275. against 28s, and unfinished sorts sold to 13s 6d. Small vealers were in short supply in a smaller entry and butchers competed keenly at levels fully up to those recorded at the last sale. The best runner made £9 10s, against £8 ss. Vealers sold steadily to £5, a fall of 5s on the previous best. Baconers met steady competition and held to recent values. The best baconcr price was 2s lower at £3 17s, and porkers were unchanged at £2 18s. Average quotations were 6id to 6*d per lb for baconers. and Old to 63d per lb for porkers, the latter being slightly lower than last week. J. Finlayson, Tuhikaramea. A line sold on account of Mr R. A. Bent, Puketurua, made to £ls 10s. Lines from Mr H. Windsor, Matangi, made to £l2 10s. Cows and heifers sold on account of Mr H. J. Finlayson, Tuhikaramea, made to £lO 15s, and a consignment from Mr H. Windsor, Matangi, made to £lO 10s. Cattle from the Matarawa Land Company, Putaruru, sold to £8 12s 6d, and a line from Mr R. Nash, Frankton, made to £8 ss. A lot from Mr F. C. Storey, Ohinewai, made to £7 15s. Dalgety and Co. f Ltd. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, report that at their weekly Westfield stock market yesterday the offering of beef totalled 110 head, comprising 35 steers and 75 cows and heifers, compared with 194 head last week. The quality of the offering was fully up to standard and a steady demand resulted in values for ox and cow beef remaining on a par with last week's quotations. Extra choice ox beef sold to 36s per 1001 b. Sheep.—We offered a good yarding of sheep, for which there was a steady demand, and our quotations remain on a par with last week’s. Extra heavy prime wethers, £1 2s 3d to £1 3s; heavy prime, £1 Is 3d to £1 2s; medium, 19s 9d to £1 Is; light and unfinished, 17s 6d to 19s 6d; heavy prime ewes, 10s 9d to 11s 6d; lighter, 8s to 10s 6d; other ewes, 6s to 7s 6d. Lambs.—An average entry of lambs Bold freely at full late rates. Heavy prime lamb, £1 2s to £1 3s; medium, 19s to £1 Is 6d; lighter, 17s to 18s 6d; small and plain, 12s to 16s. Calves.—Calves were yarded in average numbers, which met with slack competition. Good quality small vealers were in short supply and values for this class remained firm, while values for all other classes were easier on recent quotations. Runners, £3 10s to £6 19s; heavy vealers, £3 10s to £4 12s; medium, £2 18s to £3 6s; light. £2 5s to £2 16s; small, £1 12s to £2 3s; smaller, £1 4s to £1 11s; unfinished and bucket-fed, 12s to 16s; bobby calves, 8s to 14s. Pigs.—We had an average yarding of pigs, which met with keen competition, values being fully equal to last week’s quotations. Heavy baconers, £3 13s to £3 16s; medium, £3 8s to £3 11s; light. £3 Is to £3 6s; heavy porkers, £2 14s to £2 18s; medium, £2 6s to £2 10s; light, £1 17s to £2 3s. Store pigs were not in demand and values eased considerably. Stores, £1 to £1 6s; slips, 15s to 19s; weaners, 5s to 12s. Limited, reports on the sale as follows; At the West-field fat stock market our yarding of beef was less than anaverage one. The demand for ox beef improved on last week and if anything values for prime ox were inclined to improve, although our quotations are the same. Cow and heifer beef w’as again dull of sale and showed no improvement. A large entry of sheep saw T a ready demand for wethers which sold at about late rates. Fat ewes were dull of sale and eased in value. Is 6d to 4s 9d. Lambs ip average numbers sold to a ready demand at late values. Pigs came forward in average numbers. Values were firm, there being no alteration on last week's quotations. Choppers sold from £1 10s to £4 7s; heavy and medium baconers from £3 Ss to £3 17s: light baconers and heavy porkers from £2 10s to £3 6s: medium porkers and light porkers from 21s to £2 8s: small £1 12s to £1 18s. Values for store pigs were easier. Large stores, £1 5s to £1 9s: slips, 12s to £1 2s: weaners, 5s to 15s. Our entry of calves was smaller than last week's. With the exception of a few outstanding quality runners and small vealers values were again easier.
