HAMILTON TAXIS
EXTRA LICENSE SOUGHT APPLICATION REFUSED An application for a taxi license in Hamilton made to the No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan, in Hamilton to-day, by Mr R. K. Dey, of Hamilton East, was refused as the authority was of the opinion that there were sufficient taxis in the town at the present time. “ When I was here a few mqnths ago considering the amalgamation of the taxi interests in this town,” said Mr Phelan, “ I heard evidence to show that there were sufficient taxis in the town. Has the position changed since ?” Mr H. Deverell, proprietor of the Checker Cab Company, said in evidence that the the position had not changed, and that there were sufficient taxis in Hamilton for the needs of the town. “ It is a fallacy for applicants to come before me without bringing evidence to support their claims,” said the Authority in referring to the fact that Mr Dey had not called evidence. “ Having "regard to the facts,” said Mr Phelan, “ I can see no reason why Hamilton requires another taxi.”
