CUSTOMS RETURNS
INCREASES AT.AUCKLAND CONTROL NOT YET EFFECTIVE (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Substantial advances were recorded in all branches of the revenue collected by the Customs Department at Auckland last month, compared with February of the previous year. The figures for the first 11 months of the present financial year arc also ahead of the returns for the corresponding period of 1937-38. Customs revenue last month was £317,895, an increase of £43,107, compared with February, 1938. and £20,419 above the collection for January of this year. The bulk of the goods landed during the month were ordered prior to December 5 and, as a result, they are not affected by the subsequent restrictions. It is considered that the full effects of the new policy are not likely to be reflected in the customs returns until about May. Eleven Months’ Figures There was a yield of £79,781 from motor spirit tax. an advance of £8323 on February, 1938, while the £3526 collected from tyre duty compared with £1129. Although below January’s unusually large collection, sales tax produced £80,963, which is £11.708 ahead of the corresponding month last year. Excise on beer, amounting to £19,967, was £2600 ahead of February. 1938. For the 11 months of the present financial vear customs revenue collected at Auckland was £3.303,010, an increase of £57.213 on the corresponding period last year. The combined total of motor spirit and tyro duties was £847.037, an advance of £75.243, While sales tax collection rose from £957,342 to £986,21,0.
