HIKING HOLIDAY
TWO YOUNG HAMILTONIANS BEAUTY OF THE EAST COAST Two young Hamilton men have just returned from a hiking trip from Gisborne to Rotorua by way of Cape Runaway and, looking remarkably fit, they consider the experience was the ideal holiday. The hikers travelled to Gisborne from Hamilton by car and after loading packs of 321 b each on to their shoulders they set off on a walking trip of 257 miles. Both trampers were enthusiastic about the beauty of the route. There was a combination of native bush, mountain streams and ocean views. Twenty-six Miles In One Day The average mileage travelled each day was 22£, the greatest distance in one day being 26 miles, but this, they admit, was a little too far for enjoyment. A distance of 18 miles between breakfast and lunch and a walk of 12 £ miles in four hours are two features of the journey which were outstanding. A few of the highlights of the trip mentioned by the Hamiltonians were the soda springs of Te Puia, a remarkably cold river which they endeavoured to ford'at 4.3 U a.m. one day, the beautiful sunrise over the hills at the head waters of the Raukokore River, Waihou Bay and the fact that the Maoris in many districts still believed in ghosts ami spirits.
