POLO SELECTION

GOLD CUP CONTEST AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL TEAM SIX PLAYERS ANNOUNCED Four polo players from the Wal- ! kato will be selected next Saturday to i represent the Auckland Province in the Australasian Gold Cup contest at Feilding next month when the trophy will be played for at the New Zealand championship tournament for the flrti time in the Dominion. Of the eight players to be chosen to play a trial game at Claudelands on Saturday when the final selection will be made by the selectors, Messrs G. De Vere Chitty (Hamilton). H. W. Wilson (Waimai) and C. Potts (Cambridge), six have already been announced. They are K. Peake (Cambridge), G. Peake v Matangi), F. Klaus, sen. (Morrinsville), R. Nolan (Cambridge), G. Howlett (Matangl), and L. R. Kay (Cambridge). Two other ; names will be announced on Friday ! following the tournament at Waerenga. j On a 10 handicap, K. Peake is the , highest handicapped player in New Zealand, and his selection for the team Is certain.. Considering his form last season, especially in the New Zealand team which won the Gold Cup In Sydney last season, and also the Improved performance he gave at Claudelands last Saturday, G. Peake, captain of ths Matangl team, may be considered certain to find a place in the final selec- . tion. Nolan In Good Form There is no player in the No. 1 position in New Zealand on a higher handicap than R. Nolan, who has been playing his usual solid game recently. G. Howlett, the Matangl No. 1, is at present on a flve only, but he is sure to earn an increase this season, for his form Improves with eVery game. His selection for the trial game was merited. Kay played a better game on Saturda> at Claudelands than he did at Cambridge in the previous match between Matangi and Cambridge, and, no doubt as a result of the later exhibition, gained selection for the trial game. The selection of Klaus was not generally anticipated, although there can be no disputing the fact that he is a fine player. He leads the Morrinsville team and is a great strategist. Had J. R. Ranstcad, of Matangi, played to his Cambridge form at Claudelands last Saturday he may have won selection.
