THIRD-WICKET STAND
BADELEY AND JORDAN EAST'S POSITION SECURED i A third-wicket stand of 118 runs by Badelev and Jordan secured Hamilton East's position when the side batted first against Hamilton on No. 2 wicket, Seddon Park. After a slow start both these batsmen commenced to take their toll of the bowling, and j despite frequent changes were not J 1 dismissed until they had scored 73 1 and 65 respectively. When Badeley was sent back there were 18 4 runs on Ihe board for Ihree wickets and the later batsmen were able to take risks. East completed the day in a strong position with 230 on the board and captured two Hamilton wickets for 48. Early it looked as if the bowlers might be on top, as the wicket was inclined to be patchy, but later in the afternoon it was playing much easier and the bowlers had to work for their wickets. Pedrotti, who kept a good length throughout and obtained a fair amount of nip off the pitch, finished with the creditable average of five wickets for 47 runs off nine overs. i 1 Skeet Almost Run Out Hamilton East had a lucky escape J early when Badeley and R. Skeet attempted a short single and both batsmen hesitated in the middle of the
pitch. Badeley then grot home quickly, hut Skeet was well wide of his crease as Sandford returned the ball. It went to the wrong end, however, and Skeet was able to reach safety before a transfer could be made. After a quiet spell in which both batsmen were mistiming. Badeley j took a four and a brace off an over I from Lissette. With the score at 20 j Lissette gave way to Sandford. The bowlers continued to hold the upper hand, Everest bowling a maiden to Skeet and Sandford having only a single taken off his next over. Badeley brought up 30 after 40 minutes’ play. In Sandford's third over Badeley snicked one hard to Bary at third slip, but the fieldsman failed to accept a difficult, catch: Lissette made his second bowling ! change when he brought on Pedrotti ; from the southern end. The move ; proved successful, Skeet getting his , leg in front of a straight one which ! he attempted to swing at. 31—1—7. , Bright joined Badeley, who sent j Pedrotti away to the long-off bound- , ary. After bowling steadily but without success, Sandford was replaced by . Finlay. Pedrotti continued from the ! other end, Bright lifting him to the square-leg boundary for four. A single in the same over brought up the half-century, and then Bright got j Finlay away to the fine-leg boundary, j Bright Confident Despite the fact that the wicket was inclined to play tricks, Bright was batting confidently, and he took nine off one over from Finlay. Badeley \ continued to play carefully, being I content to pick the safe balls. How- \ ever, just when Bright was shaping j well he lifted one from IJssette into ! Main's hands on the boundary. 60— j Badeley now commenced to attack ! the howling, scoring on both sides of j the wicket with crisp shots, a beauti- j ful off drive to the boundary bringing ! up 00 and sending Badeley’s score to ! 4 3. J. Everest was then brought on ! in an effort to shift him. but a eonii- ! dent appeal for leg-before off the I second ball was disallowed. Jordan, [ meanwhile, was putting plenty of power behind bis shots, taking a four j off J. Everest and two at the expense of Pedrotti. A beautiful leg glance which sent I the ball to the pickets brought up Badeley’s 50. while Jordon proceeded to fake two fours and a six of an over from J. Everest. Jordan raced on to 40. and the batsmen definitely had command of the* situation. The tea : adjournment was taken with ttie score
f i at 149 for two wickets, Badeley be--3 ing 57 and Jordan 46. Lissette Breaks Partnership | Lissette and Sandford were the , bowlers after Ihe interval. Jordan , bringing up his 50 by gelling Lissette away to the fence. Sandford was then treated in similar manner by Badeley and 160 soon appeared on the board. When the score reached 180 E. Everest was brought on again hut it was Lissette who eventually broke up the partnership, Avery taking a good catch at short, mid-off. 184—3—73. j Going failed to last, being bowled by K. Everest. Perrett started ronff- | dcntly. turning one from Everest 1 beautifully to fine leg for a brace. He 1 lost Jordan, however, when the latter went for a big hit off Lissette and was caught in the long field by Harding with his score at 65. Perrett had a life ofT the next over from Lissette when he lifted one, right into Main's bands in the off-field only to see a comparatively easy chance dropped. 1 T. ."keel had joined Perrett and he brought 200 up with a nice off drive. Just, when he looked to he set he got his leg in front to be Pedrotti's second lbw victim. 216—6—7. In his next over Pedrotti beat Perrett all the way and seven wickets were now down for 225. Jackson followed next ball l when he nibbled at one on the off and j Sandford took a good one-handed catch at point. Harding played some nice shots but ! could not resist flicking at a ball on j *be off and was caught behind, i Plough did not last long, being clean howled by Pedrotti, and the innings closed for 230. Lissette Goes Leg Before Lissette and J. Everest went to the
wickets with an hour of play remaining. to face the bowling of Going and Bright. Tn Bright’s second over Lisset.te stepped in front of a straight one and paid the penalty. 7 —l—4. Joined by Harding. Everest hooked one from Bright dangerously close to T. Skeet., the fieldsman just failing to close on it. Harding then cut Going beautifully away to the boundary but had a life two balls later when he skied Going backward of Badeley in the slips. With the score at 37 Harding opened his shoulders to Going, failed to connect, and was bowled. Bary also failed to survive, being clean bowled by Badeley for 2.
