OBITUARY
MR L. B. HARRIS (Special to Times) HUNTLY, Saturday The death has occurred of Mr Louis Bassiere Harris, a former Huntly resident. Born in Onehunga in 1864, Mr Harris in 186 G moved to Hamilton with his parents, and his father held the first hotel license here, first in a tent and then in the Royal Hotel. The family moved to Ngaruawahia in 1878, then to Frankton and later to Huntly. When a young man, Mr Harris was employed in Cambridge and afterwards went to Dargaville with the late Mr W. J. Ralph, entering the hotel business. He returned to Huntly and assisted his father in the hotel and when his father retired about 40 years ago he took over the license, holding it until he left Huntly about 14 years ago. In his youth Mr Harris was a noted athlete, being a hop, step and jump champion and a noted Rugby footballer. He was a member of the Dargaville, Ponsonby and Huntly teams. He took a keen interest in horse racing, owning Cavaliero (one of the champion jumpers of the Dominion), Toreador, Antic, Luperino, Irish Jig, Cantorus and Presently. While in Huntly Mr Harris took an active part in local affairs, being associated with the Huntly Road Board and Huntly Town Board, and he was a director and chairman of the Huntly Erick and Fireclay Company, Ltd. The late Mr Harris is survived by his wife, one son and three daughters. MISS K. V. EDQERLEY (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Monday The death occurred yesterday of Miss K. V. Edgerley, acting-headmistress of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School. She had served on the school staff for over 30 years.
