RECORD SWIMS

TITLES CHANGE HANDS SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS PROMINENT GIRL DIVER BEATEN Practically a full gallery of spectators saw four records broken when the South Auckland swimming championships were contested at the Hamilton Municipal Baths on Saturday night. It was one of the largest crowds seen at a meeting in Hamilton and indicated the increased interest evinced by the public in the sport and reflected the marked improvement shown by Waikato swimmers during the last few years. The first record to go was the senior men’s 75 yards freestyle. K. Waterson, Matamata, the holder of the title, improved his time to the extent of one-fifth of a second, swimming the distance in 44 seconds and beating the Hamilton entrant, A. Sutherland. Waterson also annexed the senior 100 yards title when he defeated K. Webster, Hamilton, who put up the record time of 02 seconds last year. Waterson swam the distance in 6i 2-5 seconds. In Ihe 100 yards intermediate girls' freestyle, V. Taylor, the Paeroa record holder, improved on her own time of 82 seconds by covering the distance in 77 4-5 sec. She swam a good race to head off the Hamilton swimmer, M. Richardson. Miss Taylor also bettered her pervious time for tile 50 yards freestyle by sprinting it in 34 sec. against 34 1-5 sec. Diving Champion Beaten Sensation was attached to the intermediate girls' diving championship, the title-holder and runner-up in the New Zealand event, J. Macdonald, conceding her title to the Y.M.C.A. entrant, B. Sa’/iderson. Miss Macdonald was placed third and was also defeated by B. Lewis, who took second position. Excitement amongst the crowd was at a high pitch during the swimming of the 500 yards flying squadron. That championship was formerly held by the Morrinsville club but they lost it on Saturday evening to Hamilton, the only other entrants. The flying squadron is usually the highlight of the meeting, but its brilliance was somewhat dimmed on this occasion by three teams drawing out at the last minute. When six competitors in the final of the senior men's 50 yards freestyle broke and were disqualified, the contest was spoilt to a great extent. However, Hopcroft and Sutherland had a stirring battle at the finish, the former taking the decision by a narrow margin. Efficient Organisation Great credit reflects on the officials of the South Auckland Centre for the efficient manner in which they ran the. meeting. The fine organisation of Mr E. H. Grocott and the secretary, Mr C. L. S. Cross, played a prominent part in that respect, while the excellent starting of the president. Mr L. I. Day, was a feature of the evening.
