FURTHER RECORD ESTABLISHED KEEN FINISH IN £IOOO CUP SULEIMAN WINS THE SPRINT Keen racing and record totalisator figures were features of the opening day' of the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s annual gathering on Saturday, when, under ideal conditions, a large crowd participated in the most successful opening yet enjoyed by this progressive body. Llangollen, who, after a succession of engagements over sprint distances, was having her first trial over a mile and three furlongs, proved her class to emulate the performance of Stretto last season and win the richly endowed Herries’ Memorial Cup from Golden Sheila and Hot Box, both of whom were at good odds on either machine. Suleiman scored in attractive style among the sprinters, taking charge at the end of a furlong and winning with something in reserve. Following are the concluding results:—■

Winner trained by L. D. Rice, Te Aroha. Pirate King, after a series of failures, returned to Torm to-day when he finished on In very resolute style to win going away. The favourite, Lexden, gave another solid performance while Hutana Impressed by the manner In which he was finishing on. Orwere, after making up ground two furlongs from home, failed to go on with it, although he was right up at the finish. Te Taklna was prominent parly from May Song, Pirate King and Trevace. Trevace ran up to Te Takina across the top and at the half-mile the pair was followed by Kenneth Robert, Pirate King, Penzance and Lexden. There was no alteration as they levelled up for home, Pirate King coming through in the straight to win by two and a-half lengths from Lexden, who beat Hutana by hair a length. Bronwen was right up fourth, then followed Orwere, Haile Boy. Bonstar, May Song and Bronze Step. Time, 1.12 4-5. The w’lnner paid well over a score and Hutana returned double figures for a place. He took charge at the end of the first fur- f long and thn issue was never arterwards in doubt. Maori Song came home strongly, but Te Poto and Tosh had every chance'jind railed. Aero King. Suleiman. Gay Chou. Royal Vaals and Te Polo were first out. then Suleiman went into the learj from Te Poto. Palustre, Royal Bachelor. Aero King. Royal j Vaals and Anion. Suleiman led Into the straight rrom Te Poto and Royal Rachelor. with Palustre. Gay Chou and Aero King next. Nothing had a chance with Suleiman, who went on to win by three lengfhs rrom Maori Song, who finished rast to beat Anion by one length and a-half.
