FIRST DAY RESULTS ESTEEM OVER HURDLES LLANGOLLEN’S GRAND TRIUMPH (Special from “Martian”) TE AROHA, Saturday. The annual meeting of the Te Aroha Jockey Club was opened at the Te Aroha racecourse to-day in warm, sunny weather and before an excellent attendance. The track was in good order. Kittle, three furlongs from home and fighting on in courageous style when challenged strongly by Electric Spear and Si well over the last 100 yards or so. Kittle attempted to win from end to end but she raded quickly Inside tbe distance. Celtic -Lad fell at tbe first fence and Chikara lost his rider at the next, innie was in charge passing the stands from Electric Spear, Desert Star, Aramis, Siwell. Stanstead and Esteem. Aramis lost his rider along the back and here Kittle was bowling along three lengths out rrom Electric Spear. Desert Star, Aramis, Esteem (who was improving his position 1. S’weii. Once over the last rence. Esteem asserted himself to carry on and win narrowly by a neck from Electric Spear, who finished strongly to beat Siwell by a similar margin. Winner trained by J. Cruse, Takaninf. It was with a fine finishing effort that Veritable got up to win in verv solid style. In the middle stages of the race he was near the rear or the field but arter being handily placed at the turn he improved his position in the straight to ■win well. iMlntlaw ran up to his good foTm at Matamata although lie had no chance with the winner at the end. Brit-* ish Nation shaped creditably -but Hunter’s Rose, the favourite and Odtaa were never dangerous once the real business or the race was on. The latter, however, drew a poor marble and had to cover extra ground to secure a favourable position. (British Nation led out from Kotahi Acre. Gamos and Hunter’s Rose. Gamos led along the back from Rival, Odtaa and Broadway Bill with Hunter's Rose, British Nation, star Vaal heading the others. Broadway Bill moved up smartly to be right behind Gamos at the turn with Odtaa close up and British Nation, <tar Vaal. Hunter’s Rose, Rival and Telamon next. In the straight Veritable came through and hit the front at the distance to go on and win decisively by two and a-bair lengths rrom Mintlaw, who beat (British Nation by hair a length. Brazen Bold headed Silver -Stick as they levelled up for home and the pair was followed here by Foxmond, Our Jean, Mayfair. Surveyor’s Lass and Esquire, who was improving his position. Our Jean averted herseir in the straight and. hitting the front inside the distance, she earned on win easing up by two lengths rrom Silver Stick, with Esquire another length away third.
