MAORI’S FATAL INJURIES
JUMP FROM MOTOR-LORRY (Special to Times) PUKEKOHE Friday, Jumping from a motor-lorry last evening as it was passing a dwelling on the Puni-Pukekohe road, where he resided. Mr Tereina Manawhili, single, aged about 60, was thrown violently to the ground and suffered injuries from which he died while on his w*ay In a taxi to the Auckland Hospital. CHILD SCALDED DEATH IN HOSPITAL (Special to Times) WHAN GAR El, Friday Severe scalds resulted in the death In the Whangarei Hospital last night of Caroline Bushby 13 months), daughter of Mr \V. L. Bushby, of Whakapara. The child was playing on the porch of her parents’ home, where her mother had left a tub of hot water in which were clothes on a stool. COLLAPSE OF A WHARF PEOPLE THROWN IN RIVER (Special to Times) WHAKATANE, Friday There was great excitement yesterday morning when a section of the staging of the old wharf on the bank of the Whakatane River collapsed, throwing into the water about 20 children and adults gathered on it to watch the High School swimming sports. A number were in shallowwater only, and the fact that there was little currentjbecause of the high tide made it easy for most of the rcmaindeito get quickly to shore. However, one boy. Hilly Rodgers, was further out in the stream and was seen to be in difficulties by Constable 1”. Fuller, who jumped in fully clothed, and brought the boy to shore without difficulty.
