HAMILTON. i In those tight lfttla Islands of ours we are rapidly approaching a very grave national problem —that Is, the exhaustion of our timber resources. Our forests are not over-large, and they have been consistently and increasingly depleted by the demands of the community for building timbers. We have not been at all prudent In the use of the very excellent decorative timbers which are peculiar to our country. It is common knowledge that the kauri, a unique Umber which is world-famous, has already approached exhaustion point, while other notable timbers are also in scarce supply. The cause of this is the fact that New Zealand is still timber-minded. Wood frame and weatherboard construction is still the commonest form employed In cur domestio architecture. With Che approaching timber shortage, we Should readjust our Ideas. We should conserve our timber for the finishing and decorating of our homes, rather than use It entirely for construction; otherwise in a few years’ time we will be lamenting our laok of vision. We must remember that, a tree is a product of nature; it is not synthetic and oannot be manufactured overnight. To come to maturity may tako from one hundred to three hundred years, yet we ruthlessly destroy it in a few days. Forests when depleted, can effe.ot a very substantial change upon the climatic conditions of a country. They exercise a very decided influence on the soil and watercourses of the country. Time and spaoe does not permit of our entering Into the details of these effects, but full information can readily he secured from any forestry officer. Should we not, therefore, look about for some building material which will replace timber and allow us to conserve this splendid material for the cultured finish and artlstio deooratlon of our homes and buildings?
