ANTI-JEW CRUSADE

A World Danger : : Abomination to Free Men

THE SPREAD of anti-semitism grows more ominous every day. To call everyone a scoundrel merely because he happens to believe in this or that religion or political doctrine is to be guilty of narrow, sectarian arrogance. But there is one exception. It may be that there are antisemites who are not altogether without common decency, and are mainly blind and misguided. But conscious antisemitism is impossible without some degree of personal vileness. There is a case against the Jews, just as there is against the English, the French, the Germans, and so on. The Jews have been a homeless, scattered race for centuries, but they have had a common consciousness, a civilisation of their own, a separate tradition, and, above all, an unique religion. They differ from other people in a hundred ways that are rarely definable, but can be perceived or sensed nevertheless. To say that they are different is not to say that they are inferior or superior. But to be different, and to have been so for centuries, is conclusive to Exceptional Weakness and Exceptional Strength. It is, perhaps, truer to say of the Jews than of any other race that they achieve the greatest nobility and the greatest baseness (this will be much more apparent to anyone who is familiar with the Eastern—and more truly Jewish—Jewry than with the Western). But, again, there is one excepJ" tion. If there is nothing nobler than the » noblest Jew, there is something baser than the basest—the anti-semite. There is a horror about all anti-semitic literature—a foulness, a thinly veiled obscenity; a concentrated malice that cannot be hidden by any professions of objectivity (many anti-semites claim that they are not anti-semites at all, but merely “objective”). The shortcomings of the Jews are not the cause of anti-semitism. On the contrary. It is their finer characteristics that incite a certain type of political blackguard to anti-semitic emotion. There are persons everywhere who are vindictively jealous of everything that is in any way disinterested or exalted. But such a jealousy cannot venture to seek direct and general expression, for it would call forth universal anger and contempt. It must, therefore, pretend to be what it is not, and one of its most frequent disguises is anti-semitism. The antisemite does not necessarily hate the Jew; he makes the Jew the embodiment of what he hates, and that is why he is so often successful. By masquerading as anti-sem-itism, the most varied forms of malice are able to elude the condemnation which they would otherwise call forth. Adolf Hitler is Typical of the Lowest Species of AntiSemite. The concentrated malignance of his vengeful nature crystallises around a monstrous caricature which he calls “the Jew.” This caricature has nothing to do with any objective reality: it is the projection of Hitler’s own self, and those who read Mein Kampf with care will find that all Hitler says of the Jews is true, not of them, but of him. It would be well worth while to collect from his speeches and from Mein Kampf all his references to the Jews and string them together; the result would be a vivid and terribly accurate piece of selfportraiture, a true picture of Hitler’s inner being. So far he has been the most successful of modern tyrants. Although he is obsessed by war, he has, so far, achieved what he wants by methods that are inhuman and violent, but have not, so far,

engendered open warfare. All this may change, and he may yet show himself to be the most violent of all dictators, past or present. His success at home and abroad is chiefly founded on his anti-semitism. Without the Jews he could not have prevailed. He needed the Jews, and still needs them, for by Concentrating Hatred Upon Them, he has harnessed hatred to his own will. Hatred, even more than tanks, artillery, and bombing planes, is his principal weapon in the world, while his motional weapons are but of secondary importance. He is supplying his intended allies—and future vassals—with this, his chief weapons, just as he is supplying them with war material. He is doing so with the object of striking at many minor enemies and at one principal enemy—the British Commonwealth, against which he has organised the Anti-Comintern Pact: which, if it were called by its true name, would be called the Anti-British Pact. Anti-semitism is being promoted by Hitler and his imitators and followers with conscious purpose. Mussolini has lost what little originality he ever had, and is merely an imitation Hitler; he is imitating Hitler’s anti-semitism just as he imitated the German goose-step. Even Sir Oswald Mosley took up anti-semitism, although he was not originally an anti-semite, merely because Hitler set the fashion. Anti-semitism, of which Hitler is by far the most powerful patron, is not only an abomination in itself, it is helping to spread violence over a world already overburdened with violence. It is the main cause of the sanguinary disorders in Palestine; for there can be no doubt at all that these disorders were encouraged by the Third Realm, not ideologically alone, but by the dispatch of arms, money and propaganda. In Arabia and in Northern Africa anti-semitism is being spread by German and Italian agents and propagandists so as to weaken the prestige and authority of France and Great Britain, who are represented as promoters of Judaism. Even the Moors in Spain are being incited to rape and bloodshed by the belief, deliberately imparted by their German and Italian masters, that Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona are strongholds of Muscovite Judaism and of the Front Populate (which is represented to them as being a Jewish conspiracy). Anti-semitism is Spreading Even m Great Britain, and unscrupulous propagandists are producing pamphlets and periodicals that threaten to rival the infamous “Stunner.” Anti-semitic slogans can be seen on walls in London, and the less reputable of the business community are talking about “those damned Jews.” Anti-semitism is spreading in proportion as German influence increases. It has achieved terrible violence in Poland—a country on cordial terms with the Third Realm. It has gone far, but has been kept within limits, in Rumania—a country where German influence is also being kept within limits. It is growing in Hungary—a country where German influence is also growing. It does not exist amongst the Czechs—a people who are tenaciously resisting the Third Realm and its influence.

Anti-semitism is an abomination to all free and civilised men and women. It is a deadly menace to all free and civilised nations. It deserves—or, rather, it demands —the implacably hostile attention of all decent people, including those who are responsible for the foreign policies of Great Britain and France.
