WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
at jubilee The monthly meeting of the Jubilee branch of the Women's Institute was held in St. James’ Hall, Massey Street, Frankton, recently, Mrs Hogarth presiding. There was a large attendance and the meeting opened with the Institute song, after which the correspondence and business were discussed. Members were reminded that a collection would be taken at the annual meeting next month for the Maori Hostel fund. Nominations were also called for, to form- next year’s committee. Mrs Bell gave a demonstration on covering satin shoes and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The motto for the month was “Delay is the best cure for temper.’’ Miss Joan Laurenson gave a tap dance which was enjoyed by everyone. Mrs Pitman was at the trading table. The competitions resulted as follows: Bottled plums, Mrs Fisher 1. Mrs Sandos '2; zinnias, Mrs Gibson 1, Mrs Burton 2. Afternoon tea was served by the following hostesses:— Mesdames Findlay, Tury, Crabb and Killiam. AT TAUPIRI DONATION TO MAORI HOSTEL Forty members and friends were present at the February meeting of the Taupirl Women's Institute, over which Mrs A. Smith presided. Apologies were received from several members who were on holiday. After the routine business had been dealt with, Mesdames J. Murphy and R. Fransham were elected as delegates to represent the Taupiri Institute at the next group meeting. A vote of thanks was passed to the several members who have donated trophies as prizes for the various sections in the forthcoming show. It was decided that the trophies be on show in the local shop windows for a fortnight before the show. It was with pleasure that the secretary read a communication from
Mrs Chapman, that she will be able to open the flower show at Taupiri on March do. An amount of £1 10s 9d was collcclerl among members for the Maori Hostel. The president thanked the donors and stressed the. importance of this work. Nomina linns were called for committee members for 1939. Baby Jackway s and Baby Rogers were presented with Post Office Savings Bank boxes. A very helpful demonstration on the arranging of a vase of flowers was given by Mrs S. A. Clarke, who was ! accorded a vote of thanks. Results of the points competition were: Seniors, Mrs F. J. Farrell; juniors, Mrs An- ! drews. , Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdamcs Madill, Waring, Farrington, Pendington and A. Button. AT LICHFiELD SUCCESSFUL PICNIC | A picnic organised by the Lichfield I Women’s Institute for Lichfield school | children at the Crystal Springs, Mata--1 mata, was an unqualified success. I Favoured with glorious sunshine the | children and most of their mothers | and members of the Institute travelled in cars and trucks to the springs, where the children had an enjoyable day’s fun in the baths and the grounds. Lunch provided by Institute mem- : bers was given the children under the trees, after which they returned to the baths for a further swim. Afternoon tea was provided and a bag of sweets given each child. About 4 o’clock, the party left for home, radiant faces testifying to a I day’s fun that would long be remembered. AT FENCOURT The monthly meeting of the Fencourt Women's Institute was held last Thursday, there being a large attendance. There was a good deal of business dealt with and nominations were invited for new committee members. The annual meeting next month 1 is to be a week earlier on account of i the Cambridge Show. The motto lor the banner was de- | cided to be “Unity is Strength,” and next month members are to bring sug- | gestions for a banner in the form of j drawings. The Institute was notified ' of the Group meeting late in March.

Mrs Tierney supplied the J motto, “Nothing is either good or | bad but thinking makes it so.” 1 An interesting competition was won j by Miss E. Burns. The competitions j resulted : Six runner beans, Miss Bur- j nis 1, Mrs Hubbard 2. Mrs Cubis 3;; shortcake, Mrs O'Keefe 1, Mrs Cubis! 2, Mrs MacMillan 3; sugarbag apron, Miss P. Wilson 1, Mrs Johnston 2, j Mrs Tomsitt 3. Afternoon tea was served by Misses 1 Wilson and Campbell. AT KIHIKIHI The monthly meeting of the Kihikihi Women's Institute was held in the Kihikihi Town Hall recently, the vice-president, Mrs E. Raine, Orakau, presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with Aspirations. business then being disposed of. Nurse Thomas, the district Plunket Nurse, gave a very interesting talk on "The Care of Babies,” and her helpful advice and comments were much appreciated. Nominations were received l'or the executive for the coming year. The “bring and buy” table in aid of the Institute funds/did good business. Letters of thanks and appreciation were received from the Waikato
Children’s Health Camp and the New : Zealand Crippled Children’s Society for donations which they had received from the Institute. The donations j were surplus funds from the Kihi- I kihi Women’s Institute children's : Christmas party. Competition winners during the j afternoon were: Useful article from |: a sugar bag, Mrs Ivinzett 1, Mrs Nassau 2; children's school lunch, Mrs Passau 1, Mrs Raine 2. Nurse Thomas acted as judge.

TJlie general business of the meeting being dealt with, an interesting and instructive talk on “Home Nursing” was listened to. An amusing competition was won by Mrs Sanson. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Tarr and Pierce. TE AROHA—WAINOU BRANCH | There was a large attendance of members of the Te Aroha-Waihou branch at the February meet- ; ing, over which Mrs A. 11. I Leonard presided. Invitations to the 1 first birthday function of the Mangaili [ branch and the Piako Provincial gari den party at Waitoa were received. Mrs 11. itowbotliain reported that the gardening circle spent a happy afternoon at Mrs Hansen's residence. Ngarua, in January. show at the Waihou Hall on March 15. Mrs Lennard gave a summary of the Inter-provincial Conference at Hamilton, when many subjects of vital importance to the women and children on the land were discussed at length. The afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Willis and Eastwood.
