BANDS AT SCHOOLS

DEVELOPMENT IN AUSTRALIA THE BANDSMEN OF TO-MORROW Mr Harry Shugg, conductor of the champion Malvern Tramways Band, Melbourne, who is judging the New Zealand brass bands championship contest in Christchurch, said that brass band music was very much alive in Victoria, and the standard of performance among the best of the bands was pretty high. One direction this energy was taking was the fostering of band music in the State schools. So far those bands were not recognised as part of the school, nor was band practice included in the school curriculum, but for all that there were, perhaps, some 20 school bands in Melbourne, and from those bands the bandsmen of tomorrow would come. ‘‘l think it is a splendid idea for any school to possess its own band, and commend the idea to my friends in New Zealand; but my contention is that when a band is established in a school It should be given a place in the curriculum instead of having to practice out of school hours or whenever it is convenient.”
