Hamilton Playbox At a meeting of the committee of the Hamilton 'Playbox this week it was reported that the club is in a sound financial position, and everything promises well for a successful season this year. The annual meeting will be held next month, and the first reading will be held shortly afterwards. Amongst the proposals to be submitted to members is that a permanent director be appointed for the readings. Success of Hamilton Dancer Leonie Swarbrick, of Hamilton, has received word that she has been successful in gaining the degree of Associate of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (Ballroom Branch). This is a rare honour, and Miss Swarbrick is to be congratulated upon her achievement. As announced elsewhere. Miss Swarbrick will open a school of ballroom dancing in Dalton's Buildings, Ward Street, next Wednesday. Miss Swarbrick, as a member of the Operatic Society, Performers’ Club and other organisations, has given much pleasure with her dancing. Hamilton Performers’ Club A large attendance of members and visitors ensured an enjoyable evening at the opening night of the new season of the Hamilton Perfoi Club The following supplied the items. Tap dancing, Miss Dorothy Coates; violin solos, Miss Jean McLachlan; songs, Messrs Malcolm Burdis and Kenneth McLeod and George Ayo. The pro-gramme was interspersed with dance music under the direction of Mr W. Whitehead. New members and visitors from Auckland were welcome! by the president. ' Belle of New York" at Napier. The Napier Operatic Society has chosen “The Belle of New York” as its production for 1939. This decision was reached after much deliberation and it is considered that the choice will give great satisfaction to playgoers. The committee is engaged in selecting the finest available cast, and chorus recitals have commenced. Those who witnessed the society’s successful production of “Rio Rita” last year will look forward *with pleasure to “The Belle of New York,” which promises to be on an even more lavish scale, says a Napier paper. Dunedin Playbox The rc-opening of the Dunedin Playbox Club will take place about the middle of March. Mr Russell-Wood, formerly of’Hamilton, has chosen John Galsworthy’s play “ The Silver Box ” for the initial presentation. Repertory Productions In Wellington. A comedy thriller, “Someone at the Door,” is to be staged next month by the Wellington Thespians, under the direction of Victor S. Lloyd. “The Housemaster,” lan Hay’s romantic comedy of school life/which has been running for over a year in London, is in rehearsal by the Wellington Repertory Theatre.
