WAIKATO SUCCESSES
AUCKLAND SHOW AW ARDS PIQ CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNEXED STRONG FRIESIAN CATTLE SECTION (Special Reporter) AUCKLAND, Friday Waikato exhibitors more than held their own at the annual show of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral As- j sociation, entries from the Waikato districts paining many first awards in the stock sections as well as annexing several championships. Favoured by fine weather, the first day of the show, which is being held at the Epsom Showgrounds attracted a large attendance of the public to-day when the bulk of the judging was com- . plefed. Entries in the stock section surpassed previous reeords in many instances, and. in the opinion of the judges, the show was a very successful one as far as quality and number of entries were concerned. A feature of the show was the sue- ; cess of the Waikato exhibitors, entries from this district gaining many awards i In the fat stock sections, while in the pedigree cattle department Waikato breeders exhibited with conspicuous success in the Friesian cattle section. In the pedigree pig section, too, Wai- 1 kato exhibitors were well to the fore, a feature of this particular section 1 being the successes of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. Limited, and Mr A. T. Rogers, of ' Ngaruawahia, who between them carried off the bulk of the championships. [ Many Pig Successes Mr O. D. Porritt, of Pukeroro exhibited with outstanding success in the Large White pig section, winning the reserve championship for hoars, while the New Zealand Cn-nnerative Dairy Company carried off the championship for the same division. The noted ' Imported hoar of Mr A. T. Rogers, Berkswell Up-to-Date, was the winner ] of the Tamworth boar championship, while the same breeder with Burwen’s ■ Melba 3rd., was the winner of the sow ■ championship. The New Zealand Co- ( operative Dairy Company, with Punga Mara Primrose sth.. was the winner : of the reserve sow championship. Mr Rogers also carried off the reserve ’ championship for Berkshire sows, in the Large Black classes, Mr A. T. Rogers won both the championship and the reserve championship for sows, while he also gained the championship for boars. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company was the winner of the reserve boar championship. In the Auckland Provincial porker championship. Mr G. D. Porritt gained ‘ the second award, while the third prize went to the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company was the winner of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company Provincial Export Bacon Pig championship. The Piri Land Company of Taupirf. . were the most successful exhibitors j in the Friesian pedigree cattle section, winning the male championship and j both the championship and the re- j serve championship for females. Be- j sides these major successes, the same exhibitors also carried off the bulk of ( the class awards. Waikato Fat Stock Mr H. Windsor, of Hamilton, who judged the beef and fat rattle, was pleased with the quality of the entries in this section, the bulk of which came from the Waikato. The prize winning stock, said Mr Windsor, were generally ideal for ifie local and export trade. The champion beast, entered by Mr R. Allen Bent, of Putaruru. was an excellent animal in every respect. K The success of Waikato producers In the fat cattle section provided an admirable Indication of the Waikato dis>tn<3Ts suitability as a ’fat stock raising area. The average high standard of cpuality also indicated the progress of Waikato producers in catering for the fat stock trade and the fact that the champion beast came from Putaruru provided proof that this district can rank with older established districts in the production of beef cattle. With the exception of only several entries, entries in the fat sheep section came from the Waikato. hulk of the entries were of excellent type and represented an excellent advertisement for the Waikato district’s potentialities as a fat lamb producing area.
