SWIMMING GALA

CARNIVAL IN HAMILTON SOUTH AUCKLAND TITLES ATTRACTION TO-MORROW NIGHT Major attraction of the swimming year and an appropriate conclusion to Fitness Week, ihe South Auckland swimming championships to be staged at, the liam'lton .Municipal Baths tomorrow evening promise to be an outstanding success. This season swimming in Hamilton has proved more popular than ever amongst the public arid although the weather has not been altogether conducive to the sport it has, nevertheless, been keenly supported. The recent Y.M.C.A. carnival provided an indication of the talent offering in Ihe district and as the entries at the forthcoming fixture are as good, if not better, a high standard ol' swimming should be witnessed. A comprehensive programme has been arranged by the South Auckland Swimming Centre and includes senior, intermediate and junior events for which a handsome array of trophies is offered. The main attraction of the evening will, no doubt, be Ihe oilo yards flying squadron, which the Morrinsville Club hold from last Good Entries Excellent entries have been received from the six main clubs in the Centre, Hamilton, Mommsville, Y.M.C.A., Matamata. Cambridge, and Paeroa. All arc noted for fine carnivals staged in llieir towns and they have provided Die best of their talent for tomorrow night’s championships. In addition to fine Fields of swimmers in the senior section, the public will he treated to some high-class diving by the runner-up in the New Zealand intermediate girls’ dive, Miss Joyce Macdonald. She is at the top of her l'ucm at present, and should have no difficulty in annexing the title in spite of the severe opposition she will experience. There is a noticeable reduction in the number of entrants for long distance swims and that can be traced to the cold weather conditions experienced this season. However, the number taking part in the sprint events is on a level with other years and as fast swimming is usually popular with the public the night should prove most successful.
