DEARER FLOUR
PRICE TO BAKERS EFFECT ON THE TRADE Although members of the South Auckland Master Bakers’ Association declined to make any definilo statement.. it is understood that bakers in Hamilton have been advised of a further rise in Hie price of flour. This will considerably add to the present rising costs in the trade, and may result in higher delivery charges. Presumably the increased cost applies to bakers only, as grocers have had no such notification. In an effort to assist bakers in keeping costs down, the Government recently issued regulations prohibiting returns of stale bread, but it is the opinion of local members of the trade that it will do little to offset increases in other directions, particularly in regard to wages. For at least 18 months Hamilton bakers have had m understanding witti retailers that no returns of stale break shall be made, so that the new regulation will prove f of little assistance apart from the fact. that it. will aid bakers to insist on pre- L sent conditions being strictly adhered ; to. A heavy penalty has been fixed • for a breach of the regulation.
