CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Wednesday Mr J. L. Otter presided at the February meeting of the Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce over a large attendance of members. In reply to a request rrom the Chamber, the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. \V. Lee Martin, wrote stating that the question or increased veterinary services Tor the district is largely dependent upon the veterinarians available. The matter of further appointments for Morrinsvillo is now being given earnest consideration. The South Auckland Association of Country Chambers or Commerce. Matamata, wrote stating that information had been received to the efTect that the Government intends to bring in a Bill to make a universal half-holiday—except in the case of a few tourist towns—compulsory, and the association had decided to urge upon the Government that the Bill be introduced in the coming session.—Received. The Association of Country Chambers of Commerce intimated that a remit would be >ent to the next conference in regard to immigration: “That preference be given to British subjects, and secondly to North European and North American subjects.” .Members were favourable to the remit, being or the opinion that the matter of immigration was likely to have the attention of the Government in the near Tuture. Telephonic Communication The Postmaster-General wrote acknowledging the chamber’s letter relative to a direct outlet between Auckland and Te Aroha. and stating that extensive reorganisation or the lines between Auckland, Hamilton and the Bay of Plenty was receiving the attention of the Department. Fitness Week Demonstration On Tuesday evening the Te Aroha Fire Brigade made its contribution to the events in Fitness Week, by holding a full-dress demonstration in the centre or Whitaker Street. The sounding of the siren at 7.45 p.m. was the signal that quickly brought some hundreds of people on the scene, and the demonstration, showing how quickly an outbreak of lire could be coped with, was heartily applauded by the assemblage. For some weeks tire brigade teams have been assiduously practising at llerries Park in view of the Wanganui demonstration, and Tuesday evening's fine display was an evidence of the splendid alertness and combination of the members as a fire-lighting team.
