PLANS FOR STADIUM
GALLOWAY PARK SCHEME DETAILS OF THE PROJECT ACCOMMODATING 37,000 PEOPLE With the decision of the Hamilton Domain Board to construct a sports stadium to accommodate, at least 37.000 spectators, the needs of the district for sporting attractions for manv ve?,rs should l»e fulfilled. With the decision to build tiie stadium has followed the selection by the board of Galloway Park as the site. Gallnw. y Park, the possibilities of which as a site for a commodious stadium were first conceived about eight years ago by Mr F. A. Fxvarbrick, ' 'a member of the Domain Board, is : situated in Galloway Street. Hamilton j East, about 1 J miles from the new ! Chief Post Office. The site, of about j 16 acres, is naturally adapted for the i formation of a large stadium, having a ' hill to the west well suited to tlie for- ■ mation of terraces. The stand is situ- | afed on the western side with the back to the prevailing wind and does not j face the sun. Adequate parking facil- ; itlcs will be provided for cars on the. park itself, as shown in the plan, on Galloway Street, which is a main thoroughfare chains in width, and. on the adjoining blind streets. Available For All Sports • All sports will be catered for by the , stadium. While any sport will be able | to secure from the Domain Board the j right to play on the stadium on Satur- ; days or during the week, it is not the board’s intention to give unlimited , rights to any particular sports body ; by way of lease as it is very desirous j that the area should be available for any sport for big fixtures. All the spoil required for the construction of a stadium at Galloway Park Is available on the site. The work re-7uires the moving of 15.500 cubic yards of spoil In order to grade the slopes for the terraces and level the playing area in the centre. The cycle track bounding the circular run- ! ning track will be paved with asphaltic j material. Clear View For All Surrounding the arena will be terraces edged with concrete. Thus shorter peoplp may stand on the front of a terrace and obtain a better view of the sport. Terraces will be constructed on three sides of the ground with provision for extension along the Pox Street frontage should occasion arise. Plans for the grandstand have not yet been drawn and the size of the ! building will not be decided until estimates of costs have come before the j Domain Board. In the accompanying | plan of the stadium the stand accom- i modation is shown at about 500 only and some members of the Domain Board favour additional accommodation. Whatever the size of the stand it will have dressing-room accommoda- j tion.
Of no small important will be the beautification of the stadium by the planting of trees and shrubs. There is ample room for such improvement at Galloway Park for the section of Domain land is large.
