FITNESS WEEK

INTEREST IN SPORTS BIG CARNIVAL TO-NIGHT Successfully inaugurated by the Waikato-Taranaki tennis match lost Saturday the Physical Fitness Week campaign in Hamilton has aroused a great deal of attention. Favoured by fine weather the fixtures so for held have been of an attractive nature but the climax will be reached to-night with the staging at Hinemoa Park of Hamilton's first floodlight carnival. A fine programme has been arranged by the campaign committee for the gala to-night when large crowds are expected to see the many features to be presented. Of no little interest will be the big procession which will leave Knox Street at 7.15 o'clock to proceed to Hinemoa Park. Highlights of the entertainment will be seen at the park which has been specially floodlit with ten powerful lights erected on high standards. Special Athletic Championship Athletics will command the attention of the public during a big section of the programme for featured in this section will be many outstanding events. One of importance which has been eagerly awaited by athletics enthusiasts for several weeks will be the final of the Waikato 220 yards championship between C. G. Goosman (Hamilton) and K. Rowsell (Tauranga). These two athletes dead-heated for the honour at the championship meeting at Tauranga and, as the rules* do not provide for j championship honours being shared, the race is to be re-run. Both are I outstanding men over the furlong and a keen encounter is anticipated. Another outstanding feature of the athletic programme will be a special challenge match in throwing the 281 b weight in Scottish style between G. Tait, New Zealand Police representative at the Police Games held in Sydney last year, and Mr F. Findlay, former Scottish champion. The. pair will also contest a special shot putt challenge. An excellent programme of cycling events has been arranged. Mass Display by Children In the arena at the park a large gridiron has been out for the school children’s special display. About 450 children will assemble l'or a mass demonstration, the appeal of which will be undisputed for it is hound to be one of the finest exhibitions of its kind ever seen in Hamilton. Dancing and ball games will be presented by the children. Gymnastics are always a popular feature and many excellent items have been arranged l'or this section of the programme., National dancing will have its usual strong appeal while a band quickstep will be featured also. Fitness week, the interest in which has been kept alive in Hamilton during the week by the inter-house cricket competitions for the Reid Cup, will conclude on Saturday evening with the South Auckland Swimming Championships at the Hamilton baths.
