SLACK MARKETS
VALUES AT FRANKTON SLOW SALE OF BEEF FAT PIGS IN FAIR REQUEST Entries were lighter and values slightly lower at Frankton yesterday when quality In some sections was below the average standard. The quality of the fat steers forward was the poorest seen at the yards for some months, the bulk of the small penning comprising light and rough sorts. Buyers were restrained in their bidding for steers, the paucity of good sorts being no small factor in their lack of enthusiasm. A few pens of medium to heavy Friesian steers were available, entries of this class making from £lO to £l2 4s, the latter figure being the top price for ihe day’s sales. Small and rough sorts sold from as low as £6 to £9 10s. The price per 1001 b. for ox rarely touched 345, the limit generally being 33s with most sales being made below 30s per 100 lb. A few good cows and heifers were available, the tops changing hands from £7 to £8 11s, with a top bid of £9 7s 6d. From £4 to £6 was paid for the bulk of the others. There was an overflow entry of calves, mainly vealers, and the increased entries forward had a slightly depressing effect on prices. Top price for runners was £8 11s, hut this was almost 20s in advance of the next best figure. Sheep and Pigs Dull inquiry again marked the fat sheep market, the smaller entry having no beneficial influence. Occasionally values changed slightly in buyers’ favour, but on the whole there was no very material alteration hi quotations. Best wethers generally made from 17s 9d to 20s 3d with one good line being knocked down at 21s, this being 1« in advance of last week’s top money. Ewes were hard to quit at anything like satisfactory values. The general range of prices for the best was 8s 6d to 10s with one or two lines making from 10s 6d to 11s. Fat ewes were marked down as low as 6s to 7s 6d. Fat lambs, however, were every bit as good as last week. No improvement on the lower values registered last sale were experienced for fat pigs, which sometimes showed a further slight drop. The top price for baconers was 73s against 74s last week, but the former figure was recorded for only one pen, 72s being the general limit. For porkers 57s was the limit to most bids, the top quotation last week being 60s. Store pigs were brighter of sale, large sorts making from 27s to 30s. Sows were dull of sale.
