FRENCH IN SYRIA

READY FOR ACTION MANDATE CAUSES TROUBLE OBJECTION TO NEW LAW (Independent Cable) JERUSALEM, Feb. 20 French troops throughout Syria are ready for action after the resignation ojf the Syrian Government as a protest against a French-promulgated law allowing religious missions. There were riots and anti-French demonstrations during the week-end, in which five deaths were reported. The underlying cause of the trouble is France's refusal to release Syria from the mandate, which is due to expire on January 1, 1940, but has now’ been extended indefinitely in view of Italian aspirations and propaganda.
