QUIET DEMAND

MARKET FOR RAMS VALUES FOR SOUTIIDOWNS Competition was restricted for poor quality entries at the annual Hamilton Ram Fair, which was commenced at the Claudelands Selling Pavilion yesterday when 1000 (lock Southdown rams were on offer, but attractive sorts met. with a satisfactory demand. Southern sheep were traded more readily than local entries and the day s top price, of iOlgns was obtained for rams from a Mokoia vendor. The fair will conclude on Thursday when over 1000 rams will have been offered. During the course of the fair seven breeds of sheep will be auctioned and the vendors will be representative of the Waikato, Taranaki, Wanganui, North Auckland. Auckland, Manawatu and Wairarapa districts. Five South Island vendors are also represented by consignments. The fair is being conducted by Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd., and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. Southern Breeder's Sales A consignment of 25 attractive rams from Mr C. J. Hawken, of Mokoia, was in good request, prices from 7 to lOigns being paid. A pair of particularly good rams sold at the latter figure" 9 made lOgns and four were knocked down at 9Agns. The Waverley breeder, Mr A. E. Symes, sold rams from 4£gns to Bgns., six of his entries making the latter figure. A line of 19 rams from Mr W. O. Williams, of Hawcra. made 7gns apiece, while from 4gns to 7-tgns was paid for the consignment from Mr A. P. O’Neill, of Raetihi. A Nelson breeder sold sheep to 7gns., while this figure was also the top money for entries from Mr D. Sutherland, of Wanganui. Eleven from Mr J. B. Bradley, of Sanson, averaged Ggns. Onlv top quality sheep enticed bidders above Gigns.. the general range of values being 3gns to Ggns.
