TROPHIES QUESTION
FITNESS WEEK CARNIVAL FORMER DECISION UPHELD The principle of whether trophies should be allotted at the Physical Fitness Week carnival at Hinemoa Park to-morrow evening was again debated at a meeting of the Hamilton Fitness Week committee last evening when a motion to rescind a former resolution sanctioning the granting of trophies was put before the meeting. After a lengthy discussion the motion was lost.
On behalf of the Hamilton Amateur Chib members, Mr A. IT. Malcolm said it had been decided not to accept trophies.
The Y.M.C.A. had felt that the carnival would provide an opportunity for athletes to give their services voluntarily in the spirit of the campaign, said Mr L. Cross. All the organisations taking part, whether in a demonstration or a competitive capacity would he paying admission and it seemed wrong to allot trophies for a certain section only. Mr C. G. Hunt, the secretary-organ-iser, pointed out that certain organisations had already been informed that trophies would he forthcoming and the committee would find it difficult to retract that assurance. “If we have trophies promised I do not see why we should not accept them,” said Sir W. Percy, speaking for the cyclists. However the cyclists would do their part whatever was decided. While he endorsed the gesture of the Hamilton Athletic Club, said Mr F. A. Bwarbrick. he thought it was too late to rescind the committee’s original motion.
