TEST CRICKET

ENGLAND v. AFRICA VISITORS MAKE 218 RUNS HUTTON’S 1000 FOR TOUR (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 18 The fourth cricket test between the touring Marylebone side and South Africa was commenced to-day. The wicket was in good order and, although rain interrupted play twice for brief periods, the surface was not affected. England was dismissed in its first innings for 215 and at stumps South Africa had scored 11 runs without a loss. Hammond, who has not lost the toss since he was appointed captain of England in the series against Australia last year, was again successful and he sent Gibb and Ilutton to the. create. Gibb was out almost immediately, edging one of Langton’s last deliveries high into the slips. Xewson, South Africa's new fastmedium bowler, troubled Paynter, who ■ad a very narrow escape when he •ent a chance through the slips. There • vas a delay of 33 minutes on account f rain, and when play was resumed, N'ewson snapped up two smart catches vhich were responsible for the dismissal of Paynter and Hammond. England’s Weak Batting Hutton was not troubled and when he reached 50 he completed his 1000 •uns for the tour. Ames started by cashing three over-pitched deliveries from Langton through the covers, but he fell to an off b r eak from the same howler. After the tea adjournment Hutton hit freely until he mistimed a big off break from Mitchell. He played a chanceless innings for his 92 runs and was at the crease for 202 minutes. The light became poor and the English batting, which was the weakest, shown so far, crumbled in the face of excellent bowling and fielding. Grleveson’s wicketkeeping was splendid and he did not concede a single bye.
