Lyons, Federal Prime Minister, in a national broadcast, said: “ As long as the present disturbed state of international relations persists Australia will be in a position of danger. Our safety oan best be guaranteed by continuing, as we are doing, with an extensive defence programme. If the democracies stand fast and united in their policy of re-armament to resist aggression there is hope for the world.”

Mr Heffron, leader of the State Labour Party, in his first public statement on defence, said he supported the proposed large Federal expenditure on defence, provided it was properly directed.

The New South Wales State Go-, vernment has advised the military authorities that it is willing to reorganise its programme of public works, in order to begin the construction of railways, roads and other urgent tary works.
