SURPRISE WIN

CLAUDELANDS BEAT EAST LBAPERS’ STALWARTS FAIL MainTy through the failure of their regular batsmen to strike form, Hamilton East, competition leaders, met thetir first defeat this season at the hands of Claudelands. The victorious side put up a good display last week when they compiled 194 runs, and set their opponents a difficult task. On Saturday the wicket was not difficult. but a cross wind helped the fast bowlers to swing the ball, and this no doubt accounted for East running up only 148 runs an hour before the scheduled time for the conclusion of play. There was no chance of East

improving their position, and at Claudelands in their second VftYinlngs had three wickets down for runs, and won the match on the first innings.

An early wicket last Saturday when East were fighting for runs placed Claudelands in a fairly sound position for the resumption of the match. Badeley and Bright continued batting and had* taken the side past 20 when Badeley snicked one from T. Lyon and - was caught at first slip. 20 — 2 — 12. Bright went in the same over, Cassells at point taking a ball w’hich was travelling fast. 21-3-0. Batsmen Quiet The Lyon brothers kept R. Skeet and Jordan quiet, both batsmen taking a few runs off shots behind the stumps. However, Jordan opened out to a shorter ball from M. Lyon and secured the first four of the day. Skeet attempted to do the same thing hut lifted the ball right Into Hemi’s hands out on the on boundary. 39-4-9. The batting of Going and Jordan was slow, only 13 runs being scored in half an hour. Jordan was out off a snick behind the stumps after compiling the highest individual effort so far. 6 55 — 19. When T. Skeet joined Going the scoring rate did not increase to any great extent. It took the pair a long time to reach 90, which Skeet brought up with a four through the covers. A single to Skeet saved the followon and by the afternoon tea adjournment the" pair had got within two of the century. Forty had been added for the sixth wicket when Going was dismissed. Although slow, he looked safer than the earlier batsmen, facing the Lyon brothers, but his end came when an inswinger fmm T. Lyons took his off stump. 105-6-37. Solid Defence Partnering Skeet. Davison was solid in his defence but was not making runs against T. Lyon's fast attack. He was more enterprising facing M. I.yon but the bowler tempted him and Hemi took a high catch on the boundary. 114-7-5. Skeet and Jackson mad* 1 good time between the wickets to fake East past J2O and Skeet overtook his own 20. When Jackson and Skeet were associated the scoring rate dropped considerably. Hemi was keeping the batsmen quiet and his deliveries were keeping too low to be playable. It. was one of which got SkAct. T. Lyon taking an easy catch in the slips. 134-8-27. Jackson knocked Tftint about ttic field and Clough took a good four off him. { Hunt sent down one on the lee and X Jackson tried to force it. away but sent the ball into Evans’ hands. 148-9-16. Clough s dismissal by Hunt closed

East's innings 46 short of their objective. Claudelands Bat Again There was no time left for East to dismiss their opponents and bat again. Claudelands went in and at stumps had 59 on the beard for the less of three wickets, McKinnon contributing 27 made in fast time and marked by aggressive batting.
