GOOD MARGIN
WAIKATO TENNIS TEAM TARANAKI BIDE DEFEATED SIXTEEN MATCHES TO EIGHT By a margin of 16 matches to 8 Waikato defeated Taranaki in the annual lawn tennis contest which was played on the Hamilton Club's courts, Rostrevor Street, on Saturday. On the whole the tennis was not of a high standard, but the games were always interesting. A feature of the match was that the Waikato women players, who, with the exception of the Misses Beverley, were not regarded as particularly strong, won five of the six singles all the doubles. The men’s singles were mostly disappointing, a mixture of good and had stroking characterising the majority of the games. Two r»f the strongest men’s doubles combinations in the Auckland Province, J. Roach and Livingstone and L. Roach and Matuschka enjoyed varying fortunes, the former pair heating the Dickie brothers after a scratchy start, and the latter just failing to hold McCarthy and FRrnmbom in two advantage sets. In the women's doubles the Waikato players won their matches in straight sets, perhaps the most interesting being that between Misses Ruck ley and Holmes and Misses K. O'Sullivan and Graham, who were the best-matched of the combinations. As a pair Miss M. Beverley and J. Roach appeared on paper to be too strong for A. Dickie and Miss M. Dickie, but the reverse proved to be the case. Roach was off colour, while Miss Beverley, although severe, was Inclined to lack Judgment. Livingstone and Miss N. Beverley were clearly too good for McCarthy and Miss Graham, but the other games were keenly contested. Results werp as follows, Waikato names mentioned first:—
