HORSES CRASH

SENSATION IN HURDLES . CYNICAL SMILE DESTROYED JOCKEY BREAKS LEG A sensational occurrence marred the running of the Frankton Hurdles, the second race on the XVaikato Racing Club’s summer meeting programme at Te Rapa to-day when half the field came to grief in a crash which resulted in one horse having to be destroyed and several riders being admitted to sustained a broken collar-bone, H. Turjuries. Coming to the first fence the field was fairly closely bunched and Seven Seas fell, throwing his rider, T. Ferguson in the path of a number of horses following closely behind. Star Artist fell over the prostrate rider and then in the general mix-up that followed Donegal, Rozel, Aramis, Hopalong and Cynical Smile aJI came down. Cynical Smile suffered a broken stifle and had to be subsequently destroyed and his rider, J. Winder, rereived abrasions. The rider of Seven Seas, T. Ferguson, was not so fortunate in that he received a broken leg and shock. T. MoD- Brady on Star Artist sustained a broken collar-bone, T. Turvey, on Forest Lake, a sprained hand, and J. H. Mcßae, on Hopalong, received abrasions and injuries to the mouth. Hopalong was lame on returning to the birdcage. The mishap was perhaps the most serious seen at Te Rapa and might easily have been accompanied by more serious consequences.
