A COMPROMISE?
PALESTINE PROBLEMS DISCUSSION IN LONDON SAFETY OF HOLY PLACES (Official Wireless) (Received Feb. 18, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 17 The work of the Palestine Conference was continued to-day with conversations between the British and Jewish delegations. In a general discussion, in which a number of speakers participated, there was a tentative exchange of views on the suggestion of a compromise, the character of which emerged at a previous session. To-morrow there will be a meeting between the British and Arab delegations. Reports reaching London of manifestations of anxiety by Moslems in India regarding the safety of the Holy places of Islam in Jerusalem have caused some surprise here. It is clear that this anxiety is not shared by the various Arab delegations attending the Palestine Conference—neither the delegation of Palestine Arabs nor those of the Arab countries —because it is well known that the holy places remain in the custody of the sheiks, wfio are their traditional guardians, and that no one has the slightest intention of altering this position, for which Britain recognises her responsibility.
